Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the topic and time periods, and it attempts an overall statement about planned change. However, it does not provide a meaningful summary of the map: the only specific features mentioned are the fish market and fish restaurant, and no locations or actual changes are described. The statement that the area has “limited places” is vague and does not capture the main contrast between the existing uses and the planned additions, such as a supermarket, gallery, playground and seating. The response also stops before developing its sentence about the 2014 area. It is substantially below the required 150 words, so the task is addressed only minimally. To improve, report the main changes and retained features, compare their locations, and include a complete overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and then moving towards an overview and a 2014 description. The opening also signals a comparison between the two years. However, the progression is not completed: the final line, “In 2014 the area has several places,” is unfinished, and there is no developed sequence of details about either map. The overview sentence combines several ideas without clear links, while “So” does not establish a precise relationship between them. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the main changes, and connect details in a clear order—for example, by describing the northern, central and southern areas. Complete each sentence and use referencing that makes the places and changes easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “town square,” “surrounding area,” “fish market,” “fish restaurant” and “development.” These terms show an attempt to describe the map rather than discuss an unrelated topic. However, the range is very limited, and the same general words such as “area” and “places” carry most of the description. Several spelling errors—“squre,” “devaloped,” “devalopment” and “cureent”—reduce accuracy and polish. Phrases such as “highlights the area” are also imprecise for describing map features. Build a bank of location and change vocabulary, such as “is situated,” “is replaced by” and “is converted into,” and check spelling carefully. More precise nouns for the new facilities would also help convey the map’s information.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, including “Overall, the current situation of the area is…” and a sentence beginning “there are some future plans…”. Some basic meaning can be understood, but control is uneven. The overview sentence has an unclear structure: “Overall, the current situation of the area is it has limited places…” joins clauses without a suitable grammatical link. The final sentence, “In 2014 the area has several places,” is incomplete in context and uses a present-tense verb for a past map. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and an unpunctuated run-on sequence. Practise complete, clearly linked sentences and use past forms for 2014 and future or planned forms for 2020.
