Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies a few relevant changes, including the fish market becoming a supermarket and the town hall and fountain remaining in place. However, it reports only a small part of the plan and includes a location error: the history museum and library were on the western side, not the eastern side. The overview is vague (“some minimum sections” and “prominent small sections”) and does not clearly summarise the main transformation, such as new leisure facilities and the replacement of administrative buildings by shops. The response also ends mid-sentence, leaving several changes unreported. It contains 123 words, below the required 150, so the task is addressed only minimally. To improve, give a clear overview and describe the key changes across the square and its perimeter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is an attempt to organise the response with an opening, an overview, and a paragraph beginning “If we talk about comparison in 2014.” This gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, progression is limited: the final paragraph stops after “local art galleries and,” so the comparison is incomplete and the ideas do not develop in a clear sequence. Linking expressions such as “Overall” and “firstly” are used, but the overview’s “while” connection is awkward, and the paragraph does not consistently group features by location or type of change. Use separate, complete paragraphs for the overview and the main details, and organise the latter by areas of the map. Clear links such as “In the north” and “By contrast” would make relationships easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “fish market,” “supermarket,” “eastern side,” and “fountain,” and attempts more formal wording with “illustrates” and “significant.” However, the range is limited, and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “Architectural design” does not describe the map clearly, “minimum sections” is not an appropriate description of the original layout, and “prominent small sections” is unclear. “Local art galleries” also differs from the map’s label, “local artists’ gallery.” These choices make parts of the description difficult to interpret. Build a more precise set of terms for map changes, such as “was replaced by,” “was converted into,” and “remained unchanged,” and use the exact names and functions shown in the plan.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentences, but control is inconsistent. For example, “Overall, a significant changes are seen” has an agreement error, while “they re-design it and make” shifts into an unclear present-tense construction. The sentence beginning “If we talk about comparison in 2014” is also awkwardly formed, and “there were history museum and library” lacks appropriate articles. Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, as in “2020.On,” and the final sentence is incomplete. These errors sometimes make the relationships between changes unclear. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and passive forms, for example, “The fish market was replaced by a supermarket,” and check articles, singular/plural agreement, and sentence completion before finishing.
