Student answer (Band 5.0)

The map present the current town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the development plans of it which will be completed by 2020.

Overall, the old area has very few facilities while most of the space being empty whereas the new area which is going to be completed by 2020 has plans to include few more facilities as per people's need and most of the empty area would be filled with those nesseccities.

In 2014, the place had fountain in the centre along with band stand at side. Above fountain, there two small places, one for fish market and other for town hall. Same on the opposite side, there was a small bar and fish restuarant. The bar was connected with administrative buildings which on the east side. History museum and library were on the east side.

The plans for 2022 included the same size of the area as the previous one along with fountain being on the same spot as town hall while fish market changed into supermarket. Other new facilities were also involved around fountain like covered seating below, childern's playground above the seating and plant beds at the north. Administrative buildings were replaced with shops and more bars restuarants were introduced at the same spot as the old one. The local artists' gallery was also placed on the area of history museum.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two time periods and give an overview that the redevelopment adds facilities, then describe several key changes, including the supermarket replacing the fish market, the gallery taking the museum’s place, and shops replacing the administrative buildings. However, some important details are inaccurate or unclear: the history museum and library were on the western side, not the eastern side, and the fountain remains in the centre rather than being “in the same spot as town hall.” The overview also says the old area had very few facilities and was mostly empty, which overlooks its existing buildings and amenities. Refer to the planned year as 2020, and report the main locations more precisely to make the comparison more complete and reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for 2014 and the proposed development. This helps the reader follow the broad comparison. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes difficult because locations are described imprecisely, and some links between features are unclear. For example, “Above fountain, there two small places” does not clearly establish which buildings are meant, while “Same on the opposite side” is vague. The final paragraph also moves quickly from seating to the playground, plant beds, shops and gallery without a consistent route around the square. Organise details by area—north, west, centre and south/east—and use clear references to connect each feature.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “replaced,” “centre,” “covered seating” and “administrative buildings,” which allows you to report several changes. However, the range is limited and some wording is imprecise or repetitive, such as “small places,” “same spot” and “more facilities.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “nesseccities,” “restuarant” and “childern’s,” which reduce accuracy. Some combinations are unnatural, for example “facilities as per people’s need” and “were also involved around fountain.” Choose precise terms for map features and changes, and check spelling carefully. More varied location language would also help distinguish the different parts of the square.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentences, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors occur frequently in basic sentence construction and agreement. For example, “The map present” needs subject–verb agreement, and “there two small places” is missing a verb. The overview’s phrase “while most of the space being empty” is not a complete parallel clause, and “which on the east side” also lacks a verb. Articles and prepositions are often omitted or awkward, as in “had fountain in the centre” and “at side.” Tense and reference are not always controlled, particularly in the final paragraph. Practise complete clauses, articles, and consistent past-versus-future forms before adding longer sentence structures.
