Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad change from a traditional square to one with more commercial and recreational uses, and correctly note that the fountain and town hall remain. However, several key details are inaccurate or unclear: the fish market was in the north-west, not the north-east; the bandstand was replaced by a playground, not a plant bed; and the plant beds are in the northern part of the square. The description also says the fish restaurant and bar were removed, although these become multiple bars and restaurants, and it misplaces them on the western and north-western sides. The overview is relevant but general, while important changes such as the gallery, covered seating and shops are not clearly reported. More precise selection and comparison of the main features would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes, with a generally logical movement from the perimeter to the central square. Linking expressions such as “while” and “similarly” help connect comparisons, and the reader can follow the broad contrast between the two plans. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some connections are difficult to interpret because the details are inaccurate or compressed, and the final paragraph ends without a clear concluding comparison. The phrase “the central town square itself” does signal a shift in focus, but the following sentence does not clearly explain the changes. To make progression more assured, group perimeter changes together and then describe the central features, using clear references to locations and what each feature replaces.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “layout,” “transformation,” “demolished,” “converted” and “retained,” and the contrast between traditional uses and new facilities is appropriate. However, spelling and word-form errors are frequent and sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to recover: examples include “redevelopement,” “amentities,” “infracstructure” and “incoporation.” Some combinations are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “shopping receating spaces” and “designated plant bed.” Several location terms are used inaccurately, which further weakens precision. Aim to use a smaller set of reliable map-description terms accurately, and check spelling and collocation carefully. Words such as “replaced,” “converted into,” “located” and “surrounded by” can help describe changes precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a comparison with “while” and a clause beginning “although,” which shows some range. However, errors in sentence construction, tense, agreement and punctuation are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “the town hall … remainag intact” has an incorrect verb form, while “the central town square itself experience” does not maintain the past tense used for the 2014 map. The opening sentence also lacks clear grammatical connections, and several sentences run together or begin with a lower-case conjunction after a full stop. Work on consistent past-tense descriptions, subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries. Separating longer ideas into complete sentences will make your comparisons easier to understand.
