Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important changes, including the supermarket replacing the fish market, the gallery replacing the history museum, and the fountain remaining central. However, the overview is vague (“a lot of place were introduced”), and some key developments are omitted, such as the playground, covered seating, plant beds, and the conversion of the southern and south-western buildings into bars and restaurants. The claim that the bar and fish restaurant were “left untouched” is inaccurate: these buildings were replaced by multiple bars-and-restaurants units. The response also contains 130 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail provided. To strengthen the report, give a clearer overview and describe more of the main changes accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic progression from an introduction to an overview and then to details, and phrases such as “Looking from an overall perspective” and “Probing ahead to further details” signal these stages. However, the organisation is not consistently clear: the overview and the next paragraph repeat general comments about changes, while the final paragraph combines several unrelated locations without a clear spatial or thematic order. Some linking phrases sound formulaic rather than helping the reader follow the map. Grouping the changes by area—for example, northern buildings, central square, and southern/eastern edges—and using straightforward transitions would create a clearer progression. Check punctuation after introductory phrases and use consistent sentence capitalisation to make the paragraph boundaries easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of map-related vocabulary, including “converted,” “remained constant,” “replaced,” and “untouched,” which helps communicate the main comparisons. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning unclear: “variations of area,” “a lot of place,” and “covered ealing” do not describe the changes precisely. Spelling errors such as “noticable,” “expanison,” and “gallary” also reduce accuracy. Use standard terms for map changes and facilities, and check spelling carefully. More precise phrases such as “the square was redeveloped” and “covered seating areas” would make the description clearer and more appropriate to an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses mostly short, simple statements, with a few attempts at more complex structures, such as “the area of history museum in the west side was replaced by local artist gallary.” However, errors occur frequently and affect clarity. The opening has subject–verb disagreement in “map charts demonstrates,” and “Many rearrangement took place” has a plural agreement problem. Articles and sentence structure are also weak in phrases such as “area of city” and “the area of fountain.” The final sentence’s list is not clearly structured, making the relationships between the town hall, bar, and fish restaurant difficult to follow. Practise accurate basic sentence patterns first, then add controlled clauses, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation.
