IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map demonstrates the difference between town square and its surrounding in 2014 and also the developmental plans for this area which are expected to end by 2020.
Overall, the town square will become more advanced after these developments by making a number of changes in the surroundings and central area.
At the surroundings of the town square major changes are the replacement of the history museum by the local artists' lirary, while the administrative buildings will be transformed into the shops. Fish resturants, library, and bar will be subdivided into bars and resturants. At the top fish market will be upgraded as supermarket and town hall will be kept same.
On the other hand, in the central area fountain will remain at exactly same position and bandstand would not be seen anymore. Plants beds will be introduced along with the children's playground. There will also be covered seating near the play ground and fountain.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear overview of the main transformation: the square gains new facilities, while the fountain and town hall remain. You also report several key changes accurately, including the fish market becoming a supermarket, the administrative buildings becoming shops, and the bandstand being removed. This covers the task and keeps the description focused. However, some details are inaccurate or too general: the history museum becomes a local artists’ gallery, not a “library,” and the existing library is not identified as changing. The southern buildings become bars and restaurants, but the fish restaurant and bar are not described as being subdivided in the way stated. More precise reporting of the two plant beds and the separate covered seating areas would make the selected features better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for changes around the square and within it. The contrast signalled by “On the other hand” helps distinguish the central area from the surrounding buildings, and the information generally follows a sensible spatial grouping. To make the progression more fluent, use more precise links between individual changes rather than relying mainly on “while” and “and.” Some references are also unclear: “the surroundings” and “the central area” could be tied more explicitly to the map, and the sentence listing the fish restaurant, library, and bar makes their relationship to the new layout difficult to follow. Clearer grouping and reference would strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “replacement,” “transformed,” “subdivided,” and “remain,” which helps communicate the planned changes. However, the range and precision are uneven, and several word-choice or spelling errors are noticeable. “More advanced” is vague for describing a town square’s redevelopment; “redeveloped” or “modernised” would be more suitable. “Local artists’ lirary” both misspells “library” and misnames the gallery, while “fish resturants” and “resturants” are also misspelled. Phrases such as “plants beds” and “kept same” are not natural collocations. Aim for accurate facility names and standard map-description phrases, such as “will be retained” and “will be added.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex opening with “which are expected to end by 2020” and contrasts using “while” and “although”-type relationships. Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in articles, agreement, and sentence construction recur. For example, “between town square and its surrounding” needs articles and a plural form, while “fountain will remain at exactly same position” is missing “the.” In “Plants beds will be introduced,” the noun phrase is not formed correctly, and “town hall will be kept same” lacks the required article and grammatical pattern. The opening also uses an awkward tense construction for a plan. More consistent control of articles and complete, well-formed clauses would improve accuracy.
