Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies that the area changes substantially and mentions development on the west, east and within the square, so it shows some awareness of the task. However, the description is very general and does not report the main specific changes shown: for example, the fish market becomes a supermarket, the history museum becomes a gallery, and the bandstand is replaced by a playground. The claim that there is “no change on the south side” is inaccurate, as the fish restaurant and bar area is redeveloped into multiple bars and restaurants. The overview is also vague rather than summarising the key pattern. The response is 144 words, below the required 150, and 20 words copied from the prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response with an opening, an overview, and a sequence of details introduced by “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “Moreover.” This gives the reader some sense of progression. However, the information is not grouped or ordered clearly by location or by what changes and remains, and several statements are too vague to connect into a clear account. The standalone “this” and the abrupt “however” interrupt the flow, while the final conclusion repeats the general idea that the plans differ without adding a useful summary. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs and link each location to its specific before-and-after change; avoid connectors that do not express a clear relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “town square,” “south west corner,” “center,” and “development,” and attempts to describe change with phrases such as “substantial development.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “more constructions sites,” “more accomodations,” and “buildings are decided to construct.” These choices make it difficult to identify the actual features shown on the map. Spelling errors such as “noticable,” “Firtly,” “Additionly,” and “planed” are also noticeable. Build a more precise set of map-description terms—such as “replaced by,” “remains,” “converted into,” and “located to the east of”—and name the facilities rather than referring repeatedly to generic “buildings” or “sites.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts a few longer structures, including “compared to previous development plan in 2014” and “Furthermore the east side is totally change,” but control is limited and errors occur frequently. The opening sentence is a fragment after “And,” and the phrase “the east side is totally change” has an incorrect verb form. Other examples include “two same looking buildings are planed to construct” and “the previous development is changed than the latest one,” where sentence structure and verb patterns are faulty. Articles and prepositions are also often missing or incorrectly used, as in “on the west” and “on the in the center.” Aim first for accurate simple sentences with a clear subject and verb, then practise combining them using correct past and future forms to compare the two plans.
