Student answer (Band 5.0)

A town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development to be completed by 2020.

The town square as at year 2014 had fish, history museum, bandstand, a fish restaurant and a bar. By the yeaar 2020, the square had transformed into a tourist centre. It now has a supermarket replacing the fish market. the history museum now serves as the artists gallery and beautiflul plant bed have been dug replacing the bandstand. There is now provision for children's playground and covered seating arrangements by the fountain side. Shops have been established where it used to call administrative building.

The new look of the square has enabled visitors to come to the town from far and as different events are organised in the town all year round .

The new town square is really a place to be at the moment as it has all it take for relaxation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify several key changes, including the fish market becoming a supermarket, the museum becoming an artists’ gallery, and shops replacing administrative buildings. You also mention the playground and covered seating, so the response is relevant to the plans. However, the overview is vague and includes unsupported claims: the square is called a “tourist centre,” and you say events are organised there all year, neither of which is shown. The plant beds did not replace the bandstand; they are in the northern area, while the playground occupies the bandstand’s former position. Important features such as the unchanged town hall and central fountain are omitted. The response is 139 words, 11 below the 150-word minimum, with 13 prompt words excluded from the count. Develop a factual overview and describe the main changes more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic sequence from the 2014 square to its planned 2020 appearance, and phrases such as “By the year 2020” and “There is now” help signal change. However, the information is not arranged into a clear, systematic comparison, and the final two sentences shift from describing the map to unsupported comments about tourism and relaxation. Several features are compressed into one paragraph, making relationships between locations unclear; for example, “covered seating arrangements by the fountain side” does not distinguish the two seating areas. The abrupt lowercase “the history museum” after a full stop also interrupts flow. Group the changes by area or by what remains and what is replaced, and use clear location references to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing development, including “replacing,” “transformed,” “provision,” and “established.” These choices show an attempt to vary language beyond simply listing map labels. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for an objective map summary: “the square had fish” is unclear, “beautiful plant bed” is not an accurate or natural description, and “a place to be” is informal. There are also spelling errors, including “yeaar” and “beautiflul,” and “artists gallery” needs a possessive form. Aim for precise, neutral terms such as “fish market,” “two planted areas,” and “the gallery,” and avoid promotional language that is not supported by the diagram.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You produce several understandable simple sentences and attempt a longer structure, as in “There is now provision for children’s playground and covered seating arrangements by the fountain side.” However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms are frequent enough to make some statements awkward. For example, “The town square as at year 2014 had fish” lacks a natural grammatical structure, while “plant bed have been dug” has a singular–plural agreement problem. “where it used to call administrative building” is also incorrectly formed and obscures the intended meaning. Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, particularly the lowercase start after “supermarket.” Practise accurate past-versus-planned descriptions and use complete, controlled sentences to compare locations.
