Student answer (Band 6.5)

The following diagram illustrates the map of a townsquare and surrounding area in 2014, along with development plans of the area, that are to be completed by 2020.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is clearly seen that the adminstrative buildings will witness the greatest change, turning into individual shops. The townhall and fountain wouldl be the only unchanged areas in 2020.

At a fleeting glance, the fish market next to the townhall, will be transformed into a supermarket, for the public to purchase a variety of items. The history museum below the fish market, would be transitioned into a gallery, showcasing art made by local artists. Towards the north of the fountain, the current bandstand will be replaced with plant beds, to help promote greenery and nature in the complex. The adminstrative buildings below the town hall, would be turned into a large number of shops by 2020, along with a new exit on the right side, the shops will sell souvenirs and other trinklets

Moving towards the south of the complex, the empty area below the fountain will be substantially transformed. To the right of the fountain, a children's playground will be introduced, for toddlers and juveniles to play. Two covered seating arrangements will also be placed south of the fountain towards the corners, these will provide protection from rainfall and sunlight. The fish restaurant and bar at the southern entrance will be deconstructed by 2020, and used for space for additional stores.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main direction of change and give a useful overview, especially that the administrative buildings become shops while the town hall and fountain remain. Several key features are also reported, including the supermarket, gallery, playground and covered seating. However, some locations and changes are misreported: the bandstand is replaced by the playground, not plant beds; the plant beds are in the northern part of the square. The history museum is described as being below the fish market, although it is on the western side, and the southern buildings become bars and restaurants rather than additional stores. The invented details about an exit, merchandise and protection from weather are not shown. More precise coverage of the map would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes. The progression from the northern area to the southern part is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “Moving towards the south” help signal the shift. However, some linking is mechanical or imprecise, as in “At a fleeting glance,” which does not naturally introduce map details. The long sentence beginning “The administrative buildings below the town hall” joins separate changes without clear punctuation, and the final paragraph’s references to “the right” and “the corners” are not sufficiently anchored to the map. Grouping changes by location and using clearer references would make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonably varied range of vocabulary for describing development, including “transformed,” “introduced,” “covered seating arrangements” and “individual shops.” This allows you to communicate the broad changes, and some less common choices show an attempt to vary expression. However, several choices are inaccurate or too informal for an objective map report: “At a fleeting glance” is an unsuitable transition, “trinklets” is misspelled, and “deconstructed” does not accurately describe the change to the fish restaurant and bar. Phrases such as “for toddlers and juveniles to play” add unsupported detail rather than describing the plan. Prefer precise, neutral terms such as “replaced by,” “converted into” and “located to the east of.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including participle phrases and clauses with “along with,” and the main meaning is usually clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as “The townhall and fountain would be the only unchanged areas in 2020.” However, errors in verb forms, punctuation and sentence construction remain. “The fish market next to the townhall, will be transformed” has an unnecessary comma, while “the administrative buildings … would be turned …, along with a new exit” creates a faulty connection between clauses. “The fish restaurant and bar … will be deconstructed … and used for space” also has an unclear grammatical relationship. Check sentence boundaries and keep parallel structures consistent when describing planned changes.
