Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the broad transformation from a town square with several existing buildings to a more commercial and recreational space, and your overview highlights covered seating and a playground. You also correctly report the supermarket replacing the fish market, the town hall remaining, and the gallery replacing the history museum. However, some key details are inaccurate or unclear: plant beds did not replace the bandstand; they were added in the northern part, while the playground took the bandstand’s position. The library is not mentioned in the plans, and the southern and western perimeter was not entirely cleared: bars and restaurants occupy those buildings. The response therefore covers the main changes only partially, with some features under-reported or misinterpreted. Describe the planned changes more precisely and include the shops and perimeter businesses in your summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overall summary, and two paragraphs describing changes. This gives the reader a basic route through the comparison, and phrases such as “while” and “on the east” help connect contrasting information. However, progression within the description is not always clear. The third paragraph combines several central features, and the final paragraph moves between north, east, south and west without a consistent spatial order. Some linking is also awkward, as in “in 2014 the center … comparing with 2020.” Use a clearer sequence, such as describing the northern buildings, then the centre, then the perimeter, and use accurate reference phrases to show which features remain, move or are replaced.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “replaced,” “remained,” “covered seating,” and “administrative buildings,” which helps communicate the broad changes. There is also an attempt to vary wording when describing the area’s development. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make details harder to understand: “happend,” “fich,” “sealing,” and “evacuated” are not appropriate in this context. “The center … was almost empty” is also imprecise because the square contained a fountain and bandstand. Build a more accurate set of terms for map descriptions, including “located,” “converted into,” “removed,” and “perimeter,” and check spelling carefully. Prefer precise descriptions of what each building or feature became.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a comparison with “while” and clauses describing replacement, so there is some structural variety. However, errors occur frequently and can make relationships between features difficult to follow. For example, “the maps illustrates” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the area underwent a significant development, the most noticeable changes were…” joins two independent clauses incorrectly. The phrase “were either remained the same or replaced” also uses an incorrect verb pattern, and “the center … comparing with 2020” is not a complete grammatical comparison. Work on agreement, past-tense forms, articles and sentence boundaries. Shorter, accurately punctuated sentences would make the map comparisons clearer before you attempt longer structures.
