Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the broad idea that the square will change and notes that the fountain remains central, but it reports very few of the map’s specific changes. The claim that the open space will become smaller is not clearly supported, and the “small circular feature” is not identified in the visual transcription. Important changes—such as the fish market becoming a supermarket, the museum becoming a gallery, the playground replacing the bandstand, and the new seating and plant beds—are omitted or only vaguely suggested. The response is also incomplete and contains 116 words, below the required 150; 34 words copied from the task prompt were excluded from that count. To improve, give a fuller overview and compare the main locations and replacements accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic paragraph structure: an opening overview is followed by separate descriptions of 2014 and 2020. This gives the reader a simple framework, and phrases such as “In 2014” and “In 2020” signal the time comparison. However, the progression within the paragraphs is weak because the details are very general, and the final sentence breaks off at “in addtion, the surre,” leaving the account unfinished. Linking is limited, with repeated reliance on “and” and “also,” while the relationship between features is not made clear. Organise the changes by location or by what is replaced, and use clear transitions to connect each comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant map vocabulary, including “town square,” “open area,” “fountain,” “seating areas,” and “facilities.” These choices make the general topic understandable. However, the range is limited and several words are repeated, while vague phrases such as “other buildings” and “other features” do not identify the map’s specific developments. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “fratures,” “fountaion,” “facilites,” “inculde,” and “addtion,” which reduce accuracy and polish. Use precise labels from the plan—such as “plant beds,” “covered seating,” and “local artists’ gallery”—and check spelling carefully. This would make the description more informative and appropriately specific.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response mainly uses short, simple sentence patterns, for example, “The fountain will remain in the middle of the square.” There is an attempt at a more complex structure in “Overall, the town square is expect to change a lot,” but the verb form is incorrect; it should be “is expected.” Other errors include “many changes are planned for square,” which needs an article (“the square”), and “the main open space will become smaller,” where the claim is not clearly supported by the map. The final sentence is incomplete, so it does not demonstrate controlled sentence construction. Practise accurate passive forms and articles, and complete each sentence before moving on. More varied but controlled sentence structures would also help.
