Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map illustrate the layout of a town sqare in 2014 and the development plan completed by 2020.

Overall, the town square has gone through a major development, shifting from a mix administrative, library, and markets towards a commercial hub.

In detail, on north side of the fish market located which was replaced by a supermarket, while the town hall next to it remained same, most other buildings were replaced by shops, restaurants and facilities for leisure. However, the history museum on the west side was developed into a single local artists' gallery.

Whereas, the administrative buildings on the easter edge were broken down to make a way for a series of shops. Similarly, the fist restaurant and bar at the bottom were coverted and expanded into a larger block with bars and restaurants.

In contrast, the central fountain remained unchanged while, the bandstand was reconstructed to a new plant beds filled with greenery. Although, new construction were added in the south and east area by addition including a children's playground and two blocks of covered seating.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation from a mix of civic and market uses to a more commercial and leisure-oriented square, and you correctly note that the town hall and central fountain remain. The fish market-to-supermarket change, gallery, shops, and southern food businesses are also relevant comparisons. This gives the response a clear overview and covers the main stages. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the bandstand was replaced by a children’s playground, not plant beds; the two plant beds are in the northern part of the square. The library’s fate is omitted, and the covered seating is not described precisely. More accurate reporting of these features, with clearer spatial detail, would make the account more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is divided into an introduction, an overview, and detail paragraphs, so the reader can recognise the broad structure. You also attempt to group changes by location and use linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “In contrast.” However, progression is not consistently clear: the final paragraph moves from the fountain and bandstand to plant beds, then to seating and the playground, while the earlier paragraph already mentions some building changes. Several connectors are awkward or contradictory, particularly “Whereas” at the start of a standalone paragraph and “Although” before a statement that does not complete a contrast. Organise the details more systematically—for example, perimeter buildings first, then changes within the square—and use fewer, more precise transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing redevelopment, including “layout,” “development plan,” “commercial hub,” “replaced,” and “remained unchanged.” These choices help communicate the overall transformation. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice problems that reduce precision, such as “sqare,” “fist restaurant,” and “coverted.” Some collocations are also unnatural: “make a way for” and “reconstructed to a new plant beds” do not express the changes clearly. “Mix administrative, library, and markets” is also an imprecise description of the original uses. Check spelling carefully and choose standard map-description phrases such as “made way for,” “was converted into,” and “was replaced by.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “while,” “whereas,” and “although.” The main meaning is generally recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “The map illustrate” has subject–verb disagreement, and “on north side of the fish market located” lacks a clear subject and correct sentence structure. “The town hall next to it remained same” is missing an article and a required complement, while “new construction were added” has agreement problems. Some sentences also combine clauses with punctuation that obscures their relationships, as in “remained unchanged while, the bandstand…”. Build complete clauses with clear subjects and verbs, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation in complex sentences.
