Student answer (Band 5.0)

I have given two maps, one is under development from 2014 and the other one is completed in 2020. Now, I am going to describe the features , development and other changes occurs in these 7 years. The first map has a fish market, town hall, history museum, library, fish restaurent, bar, fountain and band stand. Moreover, the seond map has changed due to developemnt and adding of different features in these years.

Further, I am going to discuss what specific features and developement happens during the completeion period of this area. First of all the fish market is converted into supermarket, and the town hall remains the same. Second major developement is replacement of history museum with the local artist gallery. Furthermore, the fish restaurant and bar area is just slightly changed by just replacing fish restaurant with simple restaurant. Last major change is the building of shops over the administrative building and building childern's playground, cover seating and plant beds on the empty arae.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several important changes, including the fish market becoming a supermarket, the town hall remaining, and the history museum being replaced by an artists’ gallery. However, the response only partially summarises the plans: it gives no clear overview of the main transformation and omits key details such as the central fountain remaining, the bandstand becoming a playground, and the two covered seating areas. Some information is inaccurate or unclear: the fish restaurant is not simply replaced by a restaurant; the southern buildings are reorganised as bars and restaurants. The opening mainly announces what you will discuss rather than reporting the map’s main features. Select the most significant changes and describe their locations accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has some organisation: it begins with a list of the existing features and then moves to changes, using markers such as “First of all,” “Second,” and “Furthermore.” This gives the reader a basic sense of sequence. However, the progression is not consistently clear, and the opening repeats the intention to describe the maps instead of presenting a concise overview. The final sentence combines several separate developments, making their locations and relationships difficult to follow. Group information by area or by what remains versus what changes, and use clearer links between these groups. More precise referencing would also help readers understand which buildings or parts of the square each change concerns.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “converted into,” “replacement,” “remains,” and “playground,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward, such as “fish restaurant with simple restaurant,” “building of shops over the administrative building,” and “cover seating.” Repeated use of “development,” “features,” and “change” also makes the description less precise. Spelling errors—including “restaurent,” “seond,” “developemnt,” and “childern’s”—are noticeable and can distract the reader. Aim for concise, standard map language, such as “was replaced by,” “was converted into,” and “covered seating,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response communicates some basic comparisons, but grammatical control is inconsistent and the sentence patterns are limited. The opening contains errors in “one is under development from 2014” and “changes occurs,” while “the fish market is converted” uses an unsuitable tense for describing a completed plan. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction, as in “replacement of history museum with the local artist gallery.” The long final sentence joins several changes without clear grammatical structure, which makes the relationships harder to follow. Practise accurate past-tense passive forms for map changes—for example, “The fish market was replaced by a supermarket”—and use shorter, complete sentences when listing developments.
