Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams illustrte the layout of a town square and its surrounding area in 2014, together with the proposed changes to be completed by 2020.

Overall, the area is planned to become more developed, with more shops, resturants and recreational facilities. while some existing building will be replaced, the town hall and the central fountain will remain unchanged.

In 2014, a fish market was located in the north-western corner, while the town hall stood in the north-eastern corner. The history museum and library were situated on the western side of the square. By 2020, the fish market will be coverted into a supermarket, and the history museum will beome a local artist' gallery. The town hall will remain in its original position.

Several changes will also take palce in the central and southern parts of the square. The bandstand will be removed and replaced by two plant beds, while a children's playground and covered seating will be added.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main purpose of the plans and accurately report several important changes: the fish market becomes a supermarket, the museum becomes a gallery, and the town hall and fountain remain. However, coverage is incomplete and some details are inaccurate. The two plant beds are in the northern part of the square, not replacements for the bandstand; the bandstand site becomes a playground. You also omit major changes, including the administrative buildings being replaced by shops and the southern and south-western buildings becoming bars and restaurants. The overview is relevant but broad, and the central and southern changes are not described clearly enough. Select and compare the main developments more fully, with accurate locations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the original layout and planned changes. The sequence from the northern buildings to the central area is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “while” and “By 2020” help show comparisons over time. This coherent arrangement meets the lower-band expectations and shows some effective progression. However, the final paragraph groups several changes together without explaining their locations or relationships, and the contrast between the 2014 and 2020 layouts is not consistently developed. For stronger progression, organise the details by area and use clear references to distinguish what is retained, removed, and added.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “north-western corner,” “situated,” “replaced,” and “remain in its original position.” These choices communicate the general changes, and the language is appropriate to an academic description. However, the range is limited, with repeated reliance on general terms such as “changes” and “added,” and some word choices or forms are inaccurate. For example, “artist' gallery” does not correctly express the label “local artists’ gallery,” while “converted into” is less precise for a building being replaced by a different use. Spelling slips such as “illustrte,” “resturants,” and “coverted” are noticeable. Use more precise verbs and check spelling and possessive forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. The opening sentence and constructions such as “while the town hall stood…” show an ability to compare locations and changes within a sentence. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors, but they rarely prevent understanding. In the overview, “while some existing building will be replaced” has a singular-plural agreement problem, and the lowercase “while” after the full stop is incorrect. The sentence about the bandstand also gives a misleading relationship between the plant beds and the bandstand site. Aim for accurate agreement and sentence boundaries, and vary the structures used to describe what remains, moves, or is replaced.
