The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the surrounding area of town square in 2014 and it's development plan by 2020.
Overall it can be seen that so many development plans will be made to modernise the town centre by retaining some of it's old features.
Moving to the further details, in 2014, There was a fish market and a town hall in north side of the town centre. While one fountain was there in the centre with bandstand at right side. The west of the centre was filled with history museum and library while administrative buildings were there in the east. The southern side of the town centre was occupied by fish restaurant and bar.
In 2020, fish market in the north side was replaced by supermarket and town hall remained same. New plant beds were constructed instead of bandstand and fountain kept it's position unchanged. History museum was replaced by local artist's gallery. New pedestrian areas, cover seating , bars and restaurants were installed in the southern side. The administrative building was replaced with shops and recreational facilities. In this way so many changes has been made in the town centre over the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both years and identify several important changes, including the supermarket replacing the fish market, the town hall and fountain remaining, and shops replacing the administrative buildings. The overview also recognises a general modernisation while retaining some features, which gives the response a clear central message. However, some details are inaccurate or too general: the plant beds did not replace the bandstand, and the bandstand’s location became a playground. “New pedestrian areas” and “recreational facilities” are not clearly supported by the plan; the map instead shows covered seating and a children’s playground. The western library is also omitted. This is a relevant account overall, but more precise reporting and fuller coverage of the new square features would make it more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing 2014, and one describing the planned changes. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and time markers such as “in 2014” and “In 2020” help signal the shift between maps. Some linking is less controlled, however. The sentence beginning “While one fountain…” is a fragment, and “In this way” adds a broad concluding statement rather than advancing the description. Within the 2020 paragraph, several changes are listed in quick succession without consistently grouping them by location or distinguishing replacements from additions. Organising the details more systematically and using reference words clearly would make the progression smoother and cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of map-related vocabulary, including “replaced,” “remained,” “occupied,” and “position unchanged,” and the main changes are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “administrative buildings” and “local artist’s gallery.” Some choices are imprecise or do not match the plan: “pedestrian areas” is not the label shown, “recreational facilities” is vague, and “plant beds were constructed instead of bandstand” misrepresents the relationship between these features. Phrases such as “so many development plans” and “filled with” are also less natural in this context. Aim for precise map vocabulary and natural collocations, for example, “covered seating areas” and “the square’s western side.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, and most of the description remains understandable. However, some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation reduce accuracy. “While one fountain was there in the centre with bandstand at right side” is a fragment and lacks articles; it could be joined to the preceding sentence. In “so many changes has been made,” the plural subject requires “have been made.” There are also inconsistent capitalisation after sentence breaks, as in “in 2014, There was,” and the possessive form is incorrect in “it's position” and “it's old features” (use “its”). More consistent control of these forms, alongside accurate complex sentences, would strengthen the writing.
