Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two diagram give the information of town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for innovation of the area to be completed by 2020.

Overall, there are noticable changes in the town square compared to 2020 and 2014, they build more spots for bars, restaurants and shops while they removed the library, fish market and fish restaurants. They also added some area for the people to relax. Whereas, fountain and town hall remain the same.

In 2014, there were no shops build in the town square, so the administrative buildings was changed to shops in 2020. While there was one restaurant and bar in 2014, they come up to build more bars restaurants in 2020, they also added covered seating, children playground ,infront of the bars and restaurants, and plants beds around the fountain. However, they removed the library in the development plan.

Its also observable in Northwest area where fish market turned to supermakert and history museum turned to local artists' gallery. While there heaps of changes, town hall and fountain stay on the same spot.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main direction of change and provide a clear overview: commercial uses expand, new places to relax are introduced, and the fountain and town hall remain. You also accurately report the fish market becoming a supermarket and the history museum becoming a gallery. This covers the task well, with some features more fully described than others. However, several details are unclear or inaccurate: the library is not mentioned in the 2020 plan, and the plant beds are in the northern part of the square, not “around the fountain.” The playground is east of the fountain, rather than in front of the bars and restaurants. Include the two covered seating areas and explain the southern and eastern changes more precisely to make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an overview to details about the original and planned layouts, and the final paragraph returns to key replacements and unchanged features. This gives the reader some overall organisation. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven, and several sentences join multiple changes without clear relationships. For example, the third paragraph combines shops, restaurants, seating, the playground and plant beds in one long sentence. “While” and “Whereas” are also used in ways that do not clearly connect the ideas, and “Its also observable” is an awkward transition. Group details by location or by type of change, and use clearer links such as “In the north” and “Along the southern edge” to improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a redevelopment, including “covered seating,” “administrative buildings,” “local artists’ gallery” and “remain the same.” This shows an adequate range for the map task, but word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make the description less precise. “Innovation” is not the natural term for planned changes to an area, while “heaps of changes” is too informal for IELTS writing. There are also misspellings such as “noticable” and “supermakert,” and the phrase “plants beds” is not formed correctly. Choose precise, formal map vocabulary and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons with “while” and “whereas,” and the main message is generally understandable. However, errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles and punctuation are frequent enough to limit clarity. For example, “The two diagram give” needs plural agreement, and “the administrative buildings was changed” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence beginning “While there was one restaurant and bar” becomes a run-on as several clauses are joined with commas. “Its also observable” also needs an apostrophe in “It’s.” Use shorter, complete sentences when listing changes, and check agreement and punctuation before combining clauses.
