Student answer (Band 4.0)

The diagram is about of a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for developmenet of the area to be completed by 2020. So, in 2014 the 'fish market, town hall, bandstand, forntain, history museum, library, administrative buidling, fish reastuarent & bar' was included as the town was going to redevleopment in 2020 the requirements was 'supermarket, townhall, plant beds, fountain, childrens playground, shops, local artists gallery, bars and restaurants & covered seating'. As there are many changes for redevoplment i would suggest the better plan for town hall ehich would be sufficient and relevant.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify the two years and name several features shown in each plan, including the supermarket, playground and covered seating in 2020. However, the response does not summarise the main changes or give a clear overview: it lists labels rather than explaining what was replaced, retained or added. The suggestion that you “would suggest the better plan for town hall” is not relevant to this map-summary task. Important comparisons—such as the fountain and town hall remaining, and the administrative buildings being replaced by shops—are missing. The response is also below the required 150 words, with 77 words submitted (20 words copied from the prompt are excluded). To improve, write a concise overview followed by accurate, specific comparisons of the two layouts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response around 2014 and the planned 2020 layout, and the phrase “So, in 2014” signals a shift in time. However, nearly all the information is packed into one long sentence, so the reader has to work through a list rather than follow a clear comparison. The opening repeats the task wording, while “As there are many changes” does not lead into a relevant explanation. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the main changes, and connect ideas with clear relationships such as “whereas,” “while,” and “in contrast.” This would give the information a more logical progression and make the comparison easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “town square,” “redevelopment,” “supermarket,” “plant beds” and “covered seating,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the range is mostly a list of labels copied from the plan, with little language for describing changes or locations. Several spelling errors—such as “forntain,” “buidling,” “reastuarent” and “redevleopment”—make the writing less clear, and phrases such as “the requirements was” are not natural for describing a plan. Build a more precise map vocabulary, for example “remains,” “is replaced by,” “is located to the east of,” and “is converted into.” Check spelling carefully, especially for words taken from the diagram.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt a longer sentence using “as,” and the response includes a basic time contrast between 2014 and 2020. However, sentence structures are limited, and the long sentence beginning “So, in 2014” is difficult to control. There are clear errors in agreement and sentence construction, including “the … bar’ was included” and “the requirements was.” The final sentence, “i would suggest the better plan for town hall,” is also grammatically unclear. Use short, complete sentences to report the map, with accurate present and future forms—for example, “The town hall remains in the north-east, while the fish market is replaced by a supermarket.” Check subject–verb agreement, articles and punctuation, including capitalising “I.”
