Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the broad idea that the area changes between 2014 and 2020, and it mentions several genuine additions: a children’s playground, seating and plant beds. However, it does not adequately summarise the plans or compare the two maps. The claim that “some shops” were removed or shifted is unclear and not supported by the 2014 map, while the opening incorrectly refers to “two towns” rather than one town square. The response also ends with “In 1990,” which is unrelated to the task and leaves the account unfinished. The required minimum of 150 words is not met; the response contains only 44 words. To improve, describe the main replacements and retained features, such as the fish market becoming a supermarket and the fountain remaining central.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening statement is followed by an overview beginning “Overall.” This gives the reader a small amount of direction. However, the response does not progress into a description of the map details, and the final fragment, “In 1990,” interrupts the sequence and has no clear connection to the task. The overview also combines additions and removals without explaining how they relate to the two time periods. Use a clear sequence: introduce the comparison, summarise the main changes, then describe the northern, central and southern areas. Complete each sentence and use time references such as “in 2014” and “by 2020” consistently.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a few relevant terms, including “children playground,” “seating facilities” and “plant beds,” so the reader can recognise some planned features. However, the vocabulary range is very limited for describing a map, and several choices are inaccurate or imprecise. “Two towns” mislabels the visual, while “some shops” does not identify the actual changes to the buildings. “Shif” is also misspelled, and “developed significantly” is too general to convey the specific redevelopment. Use precise map vocabulary and names from the plan, such as “town square,” “replaced,” “remained,” “converted into shops,” and “covered seating.” This would make the limited information more informative and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts a simple comparison and an overview, but the grammatical range is narrow and control is inconsistent. In “The diagram compares two towns in 2014 and planned to complete it in 2020,” the verb structure is faulty: the diagram does not itself plan to complete something. The phrase “the area has developed significantly” also uses a tense that does not fit as naturally as a past-to-future comparison of the maps. In “children playground ,seating facilities,” the article and punctuation are missing or misplaced, and the sentence beginning “Although” is not a complete sentence. The final “In 1990,” is also an unfinished fragment. Practise complete sentences with accurate past and future forms, for example, “By 2020, the square will include…”
