Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates the town square building and plans of development to be completed till 2020.

In 2014, fish market was located towards west north , followed by town hall in north eastern side .History museum and library was situated towards west, while administrative buildings were situated at western side. Bandstand and fountain were at centre however fish resturant and bar were directed towards south.

The building is supposed to go under significant changes till 2020. Fish market will be replaced with super market, whereas town hall would remained staitioned at same place.however, in centre plant beds and children's playground

will be built along with covered seating, whil fountain remains atb same place . Shops will be built towards eastern side replacing administrative buildings.Morever blocks of bars and resturants will increase till 2020, however there is no clear mention of library so it might be ended till 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify several major changes, including the fish market becoming a supermarket, the town hall remaining, and shops replacing the administrative buildings. However, the account is incomplete and includes important inaccuracies: the bandstand was north-east of the fountain, not at the centre, and the plant beds are in the northern part of the square rather than the centre. The western-side changes and the two covered seating areas are not clearly reported, while the statement that the library “might be ended” is speculation rather than a feature shown in the plan. The response also falls three words short of the required minimum. To improve, give a clear overview of the main changes and describe locations precisely, using only information visible in the plans.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic chronological structure: it first describes 2014 and then moves to the 2020 plan. This helps the reader follow the broad comparison, and linking words such as “whereas” and “along with” show an attempt to connect changes. However, the information within each paragraph is often crowded together, and punctuation makes some transitions unclear, as in “same place.however” and “centre plant beds.” The final speculation about the library also interrupts the description rather than completing a clear comparison. Use separate, well-organised sentences for the northern, central and perimeter changes, and make paragraph links more deliberate so the progression is easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “replaced,” “north eastern side,” “covered seating” and “eastern side,” which allows the reader to understand several planned changes. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “building” does not describe the whole square well, “directed towards south” is not a natural way to locate buildings, and “blocks … will increase” does not clearly express that the perimeter buildings are divided into units. Spelling errors such as “resturant,” “staitioned” and “Morever” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise location and change vocabulary, such as “situated,” “occupy,” “be converted into” and “along the southern perimeter,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences joined with contrast markers, for example, “Fish market will be replaced with super market, whereas town hall would remained…” This shows some effort to compare the two plans, but control is inconsistent. Verb forms are faulty in “would remained,” and the opening description has agreement and article problems in “History museum and library was situated.” Several sentences lack a complete or clearly connected structure, particularly “however, in centre plant beds and children's playground will be built.” Punctuation and spacing also make sentence boundaries difficult to identify. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions of 2014 and consistent future forms for the proposed plan, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
