Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the topic and mentions a few features of the 2014 map, including the central fountain, museum, library, administrative buildings, fish market and town hall. However, it does not summarise the planned 2020 changes or provide an overview of the main transformations, so it addresses the task only minimally. Some locations are also unclear or inaccurate: the library and fish restaurant are not beside the history museum, and the town hall is not simply “upward” from the fountain. The response is 92 words, below the required 150. To improve, describe both years, highlight what remains and what is replaced, and report the main changes in the square and surrounding buildings.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence introduces the diagrams, followed by a sentence about the 2014 layout. The phrase “The first diagram shows” gives the reader a simple transition. However, the response ends mid-thought at “or one more,” and there is no paragraph or progression describing the 2020 plan. Several locations are joined in a confusing sequence, making it difficult to follow how the features relate to one another. Use separate paragraphs for the existing layout and proposed development, and group features by area or by whether they remain or change. Clear linking phrases such as “By 2020” and “In contrast” would help guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant map vocabulary, including “town square,” “surrounding area,” “centre,” “history museum” and “administrative buildings.” These terms show an attempt to describe locations and facilities, but the range is limited and several choices are imprecise, such as “upward the Fountain” and “right side fountain.” Spelling errors in “surronding,” “plane” and “resturent” also reduce accuracy and can distract the reader. Build a more precise set of location phrases, for example “to the west of the fountain,” “along the eastern side” and “in the north-western corner.” Check spelling and use consistent capitalisation for ordinary place names.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response mainly uses simple present-tense statements, such as “The diagrams illustrate” and “Administrative Buildings is situated,” with little variety in sentence structure. Errors in sentence formation and agreement are frequent: “in the diagram fountain are situated” has an incorrect article and subject–verb agreement, while “Administrative Buildings is situated” uses a singular verb with a plural subject. The phrase “the history museum is situated, the left side of fountain” is incomplete and lacks the preposition needed to express the location. These errors sometimes make relationships unclear. Practise complete sentences with accurate articles, plurals and prepositions, and use a range of structures to compare the 2014 layout with the planned changes.
