Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram compares town square and the surrounding area in 2014 with the developmental changes that are planned to be accompolished by 2020.

Overall, the major developmental changes can be seen in administrative buildings and space allocated to restraunts and markets. Some new additions along with few transformations can also be observed.

In 2014, there is a history museum on just left of the central fountain which will be upgraded to local artist gallery in 2020. The major buildings of administration on the right of the central fountain will be transformed into shops. The huge space which was allocated to fish restraunt and library will be divided into smaller bars and restraunts but more in number. In addition to this, fish market facing the central fountain on the left of the town hall will become a supermaket. Moreover, the brandstand on the right of the fountain towards town hall will be replaced by plant beds.

Beside these transformations, some new developments include the addition of covered seating in front of bars and restraunts. Furthermore, some of the space will be confined for children's playground. Addition of plant beds to the town squrare will increase the beauty of the area.

Briefly, after the major developmental changes the town square will become an area to hang-out, eat and play where people can enjoy the food while sitting and children can also play in the ground. On the other hand, official administrative buildings and library will no longer the part of town square.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main redevelopment, noting that the administrative buildings become shops and that the square gains new leisure facilities. Several key changes are accurately reported, including the fish market becoming a supermarket, the museum becoming a gallery, and the central fountain remaining. This supports a clear account of the plans. However, some details are misread or imprecise: the bandstand is replaced by a children’s playground, not plant beds, and the plant beds are new features in the northern part of the square. The library is not described as part of the area converted into bars and restaurants; those units occupy the southern and south-western perimeter. The final comments about beauty and people enjoying themselves are less useful than precise spatial comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, a description of changes, and a concluding summary. Its progression is generally easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “In addition to this” and “Furthermore” help signal further developments. The main weakness is that some information is grouped in ways that blur the map’s layout: for example, the sentence about the “huge space” combines the fish restaurant and library, although they are in different locations and undergo different changes. The final paragraph also repeats the general idea of redevelopment rather than adding a useful comparison. Grouping changes by location—north, west, centre and south—would make the progression more precise and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing redevelopment, including “transformed,” “allocated,” “additions,” and “confined,” and the reader can generally understand the intended changes. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal for a map report. “Upgraded to local artist gallery” suggests improvement rather than a change of use, while “hang-out” is conversational and “beauty” introduces an unsupported evaluation. There are also spelling errors in “accomplished,” “restaurants,” “supermarket,” “bandstand,” and “square.” Aim for precise planning vocabulary and check spelling carefully; terms such as “replaced by,” “converted into,” and “located to the south of” suit this task more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including relative clauses and passive constructions such as “which will be upgraded” and “will be transformed into shops.” These structures help describe planned changes, and most meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors persist, however. The opening needs an article (“compares the town square”), and “on just left of” has an incorrect prepositional construction. In “the town square will become an area … where people can enjoy the food while sitting,” the clause is awkwardly attached, and the final sentence needs a verb in “will no longer be part of the town square.” Review articles, prepositions and clause structure, while retaining your attempts at varied sentence forms.
