Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the two time periods and attempts an overall comparison, noting that the later plan adds a supermarket, playground and places to sit. However, it only partially addresses the map: most key changes and locations are omitted, including the gallery, plant beds, covered seating, shops, and the conversion of the southern buildings into bars and restaurants. The claim that the town had a “smaller area” in 2014 is not supported by the plans, and “lack of basic human needs” is an overstatement. The response also ends before developing its comparison. It is 27 words below the required minimum, which further limits the detail available. To improve, give a concise overview of the main transformations and describe several specific changes accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence, an overview beginning “Overall,” and a further paragraph introduced by “To begin with.” The contrast marker “In contrast” also signals a comparison. However, the ideas do not progress into a clear account of the map, and the final paragraph stops abruptly after “there was supermarket.” Some linking is awkward or incorrectly punctuated, as in “Whereas, in modern 2020 town,” while repeated references to facilities do not build a coherent sequence of changes. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the main 2014-to-2020 changes, then group details by area or type of development. Clearer sequencing and complete sentences would make the comparison easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “square,” “supermarket,” “playground,” “fountain,” and “outdoor sitting place,” so the general subject is recognisable. However, the range is limited and several choices are vague or unsuitable for describing a plan. Phrases such as “amazing facilities,” “basic human needs,” and “constructed figure for town” do not precisely identify the developments shown. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “wirth,” “residance,” and “sitting place.” Aim for neutral, map-specific language rather than evaluative claims: for example, describe buildings as being “replaced by” new uses and specify “covered seating” or “bars and restaurants.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few longer structures, such as “Overall, it can be observed that…” and “In contrast…,” but most sentences rely on simple patterns, and attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty. For example, “in 2014 the town had smaller area and also lack of facilities” has problems with articles and verb form, while “there was was area” repeats the verb and leaves the meaning unclear. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent: the sentence beginning “Whereas” is not properly connected, and the final sentence is incomplete. These errors sometimes make the intended comparison difficult to understand. Practise accurate past and future forms, articles, and complete sentence construction before adding more complex clauses.
