Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two plans illustrate a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and a plan for redevelopment of the area to be completed in 2020.

Overall, the diagrams shows the most significant changes and relocating and addition of several new facilities.

In 2014, there was in the north at the left a fish market across the street in the right a twon hall with the addition they will added a plant beds and a childrens playground and 2 covered seating , in addition in the centre of town square and surrounding area a fontain and band stand close to town hall. In the right of the centre there are an adminirstrative buildings, however in the left there are a history museum and across the street a library. At the south, a fish restaurant in front of a bar.

In the proposed plans for its development in 2020, the fountain and the town hall will remain. The adeministrative buikdings will be replaced by shops along the street. Moreover, history museum will be replaced by a local artists gallery, bar and restaurants instead of one fish restaurant.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two dates and report several important changes, including the fountain and town hall remaining, the administrative buildings becoming shops, and the history museum becoming an artists’ gallery. However, the overview is vague (“the most significant changes”) and does not clearly summarise the main pattern of redevelopment. Some details are inaccurate or confusing: the plant beds, playground and covered seating are described as additions in the 2014 section, although they belong to the 2020 plan, and the library’s fate is not reported. The account also omits the supermarket replacing the fish market and the bandstand’s replacement by a playground. To improve, separate existing features from proposed changes and select the most significant changes accurately and clearly. (Nine words copied from the task prompt were not counted.)

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic time-based structure, moving from the 2014 layout to the 2020 proposal, and uses a few linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “however.” This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, the long 2014 sentence combines many locations and changes, making the sequence difficult to follow; the phrase beginning “In 2014” also introduces future additions before the 2020 paragraph. Some relationships are unclear, particularly “across the street” and “in the right of the centre.” Use separate sentences or grouped paragraphs for the original layout and proposed changes, and organise details by area or by what remains, is replaced and is added. This would create clearer progression and more reliable connections.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “replaced,” “remain,” “centre” and “covered seating.” These choices show an attempt to describe both locations and changes. However, the range is limited, and several spelling errors or imprecise expressions make parts of the description harder to understand, such as “twon hall,” “fontain,” “adminirstrative” and “buikdings.” Phrases such as “in the north at the left” and “in front of a bar” are also not precise ways to describe the map’s positions. Build a bank of accurate location language, such as “north-western section,” “to the east of” and “along the southern edge,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

There is an attempt to use both simple statements and more complex structures, for example “The fountain and the town hall will remain” and “The administrative buildings will be replaced by shops.” However, many sentences contain errors that make the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “the diagrams shows,” “there was in the north,” and “they will added a plant beds”; these show problems with agreement, word order, verb forms and articles. The long sentence beginning “In 2014” also lacks clear grammatical control and punctuation. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use consistent past forms for 2014 and future or passive forms for the proposed plan.
