Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main purpose of the plans and give a relevant overview: the square is becoming more commercial and family-friendly, while the town hall and central fountain remain. You also report several genuine changes, including the supermarket replacing the fish market and the playground replacing the bandstand. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the library does not become shops, and the southern buildings become bars and restaurants rather than shops or a café. The covered seating is also described imprecisely, and the plant beds are omitted. This leaves parts of the comparison only partially covered. To strengthen the report, select the major changes accurately and describe the new uses and locations more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and a body paragraph, followed by a concluding summary. This gives the reader a basic route through the comparison. However, progression within the body is difficult to follow because several changes are joined in long, crowded sentences, and the order shifts between locations. For example, the sentence beginning “The fountain remain same” combines the fountain, bandstand, seating and playground without clearly separating their relationships. Linking words such as “while” and “Furthermore” are used, but connections are sometimes unclear or repetitive. Grouping the changes by area—north, west, centre and south/east—and using shorter sentences would make the comparison more coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt relevant descriptive vocabulary, including “proposed changes,” “redevelopment,” “commercial,” “family-friendly” and “leisure-oriented,” which helps convey the overall transformation. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make details hard to understand. Phrases such as “remain settle,” “centre of the manufacturing,” “converted into the different kinds of shops” and “converted itno” are inaccurate or unclear; spelling errors such as “westren” and “resturant” also reduce precision. Use standard map-description language consistently, for example “remains in the same position,” “is replaced by,” and “is converted into.” More precise terms for the new facilities would help you report the plan without relying on vague phrases such as “different kinds of.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons with “while” and clauses describing what is replaced. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors frequently make relationships between features difficult to follow. Examples include “The two diagrams illustrates,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “the town hall remain settle,” which has problems with agreement and verb construction. Tense choices also shift between “will be replaced,” “converted” and “remain,” although the task compares a past layout with a future plan. Sentence boundaries and spacing are sometimes faulty, and several clauses are joined without clear punctuation. Practise accurate present-tense descriptions of the 2014 map and future or passive forms for planned changes, using shorter sentences before adding complex clauses.
