Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the broad comparison between 2014 and 2020 and mentions the central fountain and the supermarket replacing the fish market. However, it is substantially incomplete: at 113 words, it is 37 words below the 150-word minimum, and nine words copied from the prompt were excluded from the count. The overview is vague (“many changes”) and does not clearly summarise the main pattern of redevelopment. Several locations are also misreported: the bandstand was north-east of the fountain, not to its south, and the history museum and library were on the western side, not the eastern side. The final sentence stops before describing most 2020 changes. To improve, give an accurate overview and report the key changes to the square and its surrounding buildings.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and overview before describing the 2014 layout and then starting to discuss the redevelopment. This gives the reader some sense of the intended comparison. However, progression is difficult to follow because the description is compressed into a long, loosely connected paragraph, and the 2020 account ends abruptly. Linking is limited and sometimes unclear: “after being update” and “After development there removed many place” do not establish clear relationships between ideas. Use separate paragraphs for the overview, the original layout, and the planned changes. Then sequence locations consistently—for example, north to south or by side of the square—and use clear comparison phrases such as “while” and “by contrast”.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant map vocabulary, including “fountain,” “bandstand,” “town hall,” “fish market,” and “replaced,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited, and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts difficult to interpret, including “developement,” “complition,” “resturant,” “availbale,” and “weat.” Some phrases are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “a huge space for bar and resturant” and “upper side for fish market.” Use accurate location language and specific terms for the planned facilities, such as “covered seating,” “plant beds,” and “children’s playground.” Proofreading spelling and choosing natural collocations would make the description clearer and more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple statements and some longer sentences, but grammatical control is inconsistent. Errors in sentence structure and verb forms appear in phrases such as “after being update” and “After development there removed many place,” where the intended meaning is hard to follow. Articles and prepositions are also often missing or incorrectly used: “in a middle” and “located next to it toward south.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including the comma splice and run-on sequence in “Overall Town square went through many changes…”. These problems make relationships between locations and changes unclear. Build accuracy first with complete sentences using a clear subject and verb, then add longer comparisons with correctly formed clauses and punctuation.
