Student answer (Band 6.0)

Concern for the environment is growing and more and more prople are choosing to recycle.Recycling is the act of collecting different types of trash and converting them into something useful again. However, recycling is receiving mixed opinions from the population with some believing that recycling can help the environment be better, while others believe that recycling on its own is not enough.

Many people believe that the idea of recycling is a good one as it helps conserve resources. In the past, many people used to burn trash to get rid of it which used to cause air pollution, but the introduction of recycling has helped reduce that. It is a great initiative considering the fact that, something that was considered as trash is now being converted into something else.

On the other hand, many people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe there should be less consumption which would help reduce the need to throw away stuff. To be fair, many people say they like to use recycled products but many people genuinely do not like using them. It bothers some people to use a product that was considered trash before. If the people consumed less there wouldn't be such a desparate need of throwing stuff away.

In my opinion, both the things go hand in hand, recycling should be a priority for people but at the same time the consumption should be controlled. I believe that recycling is certainly not enough on its own, and people need to work on how much they consume.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and give a clear opinion: recycling helps conserve resources, while reducing consumption would limit waste, and you conclude that both are needed. The example of burning rubbish and causing air pollution is relevant, but the discussion is brief and some claims—such as people disliking recycled products—are not developed with evidence or a specific example. Your position is clearest in the final paragraph; make it explicit earlier and explain more fully how consuming less could reduce environmental harm. The response is 238 words, below the 250-word minimum; the 19 words copied from the task prompt are not counted. Develop each view with a concrete example and fuller explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph supporting recycling, a contrasting paragraph on reducing consumption, and a conclusion stating your view. Signposting such as “On the other hand” and “In my opinion” makes the progression easy to follow, and the central contrast is clear. To move beyond this level, make links between claims more precise and avoid relying mainly on standard transition phrases. For example, the point that some people dislike recycled products follows the discussion of consumption, but its connection to why consumption should fall could be explained more directly. A clearer topic sentence for each body paragraph and more developed links between examples and conclusions would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use adequate vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “conserve resources,” “air pollution,” “recycled products,” and “consumption.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some topic-specific language helps keep the response focused. However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “people,” “stuff,” and “something,” while phrases like “the environment be better” and “desparate need” are imprecise or inaccurate. Spelling errors, including “prople” and “desparate,” also reduce control. Aim for more precise environmental vocabulary and check spelling carefully; for instance, specify types of waste or resources rather than using broad terms. This would make the argument more exact and varied.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “something that was considered as trash” and a conditional structure in “If the people consumed less there wouldn't be such a desparate need.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some punctuation and sentence-boundary control needs attention: there is no space after the full stop in “recycle.Recycling,” and the opening sentence of the second paragraph contains an unnecessary comma after “fact.” The conditional sentence would also be clearer with a comma after its opening clause. Continue using varied structures, but proofread punctuation and clause boundaries so that longer sentences remain controlled.
