Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, it is common to see people wearing similar clothes and using the same brands of mobile phones, shoes, and other products. Some people believe this happens because individuals enjoy copying others. I partly agree with this opinion, although I also think that quality, comfort, and practicality strongly influence people’s choices.
On the one hand, fashion trends and social media have a powerful influence on people’s buying habits. Many teenagers and young adults follow celebrities, influencers, or friends and purchase similar items to appear fashionable and fit in with others. As a result, they often ignore their personal preferences and simply follow the latest trends. This behaviour can reduce creativity and make people look less unique. Furthermore, companies frequently advertise popular products, encouraging consumers to buy what everyone else is using.
On the other hand, choosing similar clothes or products does not always mean copying others. People often buy the same items because they are affordable, reliable, and of good quality. For instance, many students use the same laptop or smartphone because it meets their educational needs and offers good value for money. Likewise, school uniforms and office dress codes require people to wear similar clothing for practical rather than fashionable reasons.
In conclusion, although many people are influenced by trends and the behaviour of others, I believe that similar clothes and products are often chosen for practical reasons. Therefore, copying is only one of several factors behind these choices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on environmental concerns, specifically recycling versus consuming less. However, your essay discusses why people wear similar clothes and use the same brands. Because you have failed to address the prompt entirely, the task achievement score is severely impacted. Additionally, the essay is under the 250-word minimum requirement, which further limits the development of any relevant ideas. To improve, you must carefully read the prompt and ensure your arguments directly respond to the specific question asked. You should also ensure you meet the minimum word count to allow for full development of your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Despite being off-topic, the essay itself is well-structured. You have used clear paragraphing, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a logical progression of ideas within the context of your chosen topic, and you have used cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' effectively to link your sentences and paragraphs. If the content had been relevant to the prompt, this would be a much higher-scoring essay in terms of coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'practicality', 'influence', 'creativity', and 'affordable' appropriately. The language is natural and precise for the topic you chose to write about. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated, less common collocations or idiomatic expressions, but your current range is sufficient for a solid score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is generally strong. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as 'Although many people are influenced by trends... I believe that...'. The sentences are mostly error-free, and your punctuation is accurate. You show good control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. The grammatical range is adequate, and the errors are rare, which indicates a high level of proficiency in sentence construction.
