Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the current era, environmental problems are widely accepted as a subject of concern. Some people believe that recycling is the solution, while other suggest we should use less. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the argument and present my point of view in favor of recycling.

On one hand, people are considering to recycle waste material in order to preserve the environment and make the world a better place for living. Due to increase in population, the waste is also increasing in many ways, broadly; plastic, paper, domestic waste, industrial and medical waste. These waste materials can be recycled to make valuable end products and to generate income. Many developed countries are already doing this practice. For instance, in China, there are collection units for plastic, which is being used to make toys. Moreover, in Pakistan, electricity is produced from waste water.

On the other hand, few people think that we should reduce our consumption by making smart decisions, and choosing wisely when and where to use. Water should be used wisely for domestic as well as for industrial purpose. Natural resources like, gold, coal, fossil fuels and methane gas are non-renewable, and should be used less. Use of plastic should be minimized to a greater extent as it is source of environmental pollution and when it dumped into the soil is disturb the soil fertility. For instance, in Aga Khan Hospital, the use of polythene bag is completely banned instead they used paper bags for pharmaceutical products. Additionally, use of paper is reduced, by delivering the electronic laboratory reports.

In my opinion, use of a few things could not be reduced. For instance, water is a basic need of all living beings and is used in a large volume world-wide. There must be recycling process for the waste water to make electricity or may be to sterile it for drinking. Industries are producing tons of waste on daily basis, which cannot be reduced by any means, and should be recycled properly.

In conclusion, although environmental concerns are growing rapidly and we should take necessary measures to address them. But, strategy of recycling outweigh the choice of consume less.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both recycling and reducing consumption, and it provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the use of paper bags at Aga Khan Hospital and waste-to-energy initiatives in China. However, the development of the argument is somewhat uneven. The conclusion is a bit abrupt and contains a grammatical error that slightly weakens the final stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that the personal opinion is more thoroughly integrated throughout the essay rather than just appearing in the final body paragraph and conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the sentence 'Due to increase in population, the waste is also increasing in many ways, broadly; plastic, paper...' uses punctuation that disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and refining sentence-level cohesion would enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'non-renewable,' 'environmental pollution,' and 'soil fertility.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'sterile it for drinking' (should be 'sterilize') and 'when it dumped into the soil is disturb' (grammatically incorrect phrasing). The range is sufficient for the task, but more precise and sophisticated vocabulary would be needed for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the use of polythene bag'), verb forms ('people are considering to recycle'), and sentence fragments or run-on sentences ('But, strategy of recycling outweigh the choice of consume less'). These errors do not typically impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
