Student answer (Band 5.0)
Concern for the environment has been
increasing and people are now choosing
to recycle. But some raise concerns that
recycling in not enough and believe the
need to consume less. In this essay
This essay will discuss both views
and prespective about the matter.
Firstly, in regard to consuming less
may people believe that consuming
less products which are not
eco-friendly and especially the
products that are being manufactured
by companies who have no interest
on the social responsibility they
have. Such companies often ignore
the environmental damage they cause
and are only focused on the
profit they are earning. So consuming
less products of such companies brings awareness to the big brand companies. This helps the environment which are damaged by unfiltered waste water being dumped in lakes and sea's. Moreover protects the environment species which inhabit the surrounding area.
Secondly, the people who don't believe in the need to consume less argue that consuming less is not the answer they believe that the damage done to the environment by the companies cannot be undone even by decades of time, because industries damage has been done on a large all around the world and needs urgent action. The companies should have to follow stricter restrictions set by the government and any law broken or misused should have the companies shut down and pay fines to the amount of damage caused by them. There is a need to create awareness about such companies and situations need to be confronted by the society.
In conclusion, I believe that there is no need to consume less more than that there is a need to create awareness about the situation and confront companies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The essay addresses both views, but the development is uneven. You discuss the 'consume less' argument in the first body paragraph, but the second paragraph fails to clearly explain the 'recycling' view mentioned in the prompt, instead focusing on government regulation and corporate accountability. Furthermore, your own opinion is stated only in the conclusion, which is quite late. To improve, ensure that each viewpoint is clearly defined and supported with specific examples, and state your position clearly in the introduction to guide the reader through your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'consuming less' to start sentences. The transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the link between recycling and the argument against consuming less is not explicitly established. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You rely on basic phrasing, such as 'big brand companies' and 'damage done to the environment'. There are also some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'consume less products' (should be 'consume fewer products') and 'sea's' (incorrect pluralization). To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and precise terminology related to environmental issues, such as 'sustainable consumption' or 'industrial accountability'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'recycling in not enough' (should be 'is'), 'may people believe' (should be 'many'), and 'the need to consume less' (missing a verb). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of apostrophes in plurals. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a need for more careful proofreading and a stronger grasp of subject-verb agreement and sentence construction.
