Student answer (Band 6.0)

A lot of people are concerned about the environment and are choosing to recycle items. On the other hand, a few recommend that recyling is not sufficient. They are of the opinion that the consumption should be reduced.

In my opinion, we need to have a balance of both to recyle items as well as we need to be aware of the thing we consume in order to reduce dumping and being aware of the harm it causes to the environment around us.

With growing awarness of waste disposal we need to be sensitive about the environment around us. For example, a sofa that is in good shape and just because it is a century old rather that getting rid of it would renovate the same sofa & convert it to a sofa cum bed with minor changes in style and pattern. This avoids unnecessary dumping and at the same being reused as a new furniture.

Some believe rather than recyling we need to consume less. for example - when we are shopping in a mall and buy variety of clothing and food to eat we can buy only what is needed rather than buying and not consuming them. The food not consumed is finally thrown in garbage bins and the same causes harm to the

environment. When we purchase what is needed we are consume it at the earliest to reduce spoilage.

In my view, by creating an awareness programme and educating young generation to recyle items will have a positive impact when its inculcated to them in a young age. Also, this will help them to learn how to maintain a clean environment. Banners, posters and signboards in prominent places add up the awarness. Consuming only what is needed will save a lot of money and unnessary wastage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument: the importance of recycling and the necessity of reducing consumption. Your position is clear, and you provide relevant examples, such as renovating furniture and mindful shopping. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on consumption could be expanded by exploring the environmental impact of manufacturing or the economic benefits of a circular economy. While you cover all parts of the prompt, the depth of analysis is somewhat superficial, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, ensure that each point is fully extended with a clear logical link to the broader environmental context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a central theme. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. You rely on simple linking phrases like 'For example' and 'In my view', but there is a lack of more sophisticated cohesive devices that would better connect complex ideas. Additionally, some sentences within paragraphs feel slightly disjointed, making the flow of the argument less fluid. Improving the variety of transition words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'waste disposal', 'spoilage', and 'inculcated'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'recyling', 'awarness', 'unnessary') and some awkward phrasing, such as 'sofa cum bed' and 'dumping and being aware of the harm'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic descriptors. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use a wider range of precise, academic vocabulary and ensure that your spelling is accurate throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. For example, 'a sofa that is in good shape and just because it is a century old rather that getting rid of it would renovate the same sofa' is a run-on sentence with unclear syntax. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the consumption should be reduced' and 'inculcated to them in a young age'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors limits the score. Focusing on sentence structure and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy will be beneficial.
