Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, there is an increase concern for environmental sustainability, and a large number of people are beginning to recycle products. While people are re-using materials others championed that what is sufficient is to consume less because less consumption will conserve more and improve health where as recycle will reduce waste and improve employment opportunities. In my opinion, I completely agree that less consumption will be more beneficial to the environment as it will improve general health. These points will be discussed in the following paragraphs with relevant examples followed by a logical conclusion.

To begin with, reuse of materials are essential for waste reduction. Materials used when recycled are made for adequate use again, this to a large extent reduce the occurrence of wastage thereby conserving resources. Then again, the collective effort ago humans and machines are needed to keep the recycling process possible, this thereby provide a source of income for individuals through employment opportunities, by so doing they become financially independent. For example, people who are employed to work in factories where materials are recycled might be out of jobs when these companies decides to shut down operations and focus on less consumption.

Furthermore, it has been seen that controlled use of materials will be more advantageous because less products will be in supply thus leading to reduced consumption of these items, this will subsequently lead to reduced littering. Another importance is health improvement, as most of the containers use to package edible food and drink products can be made of degradable materials that can result in emission of harmful substances in the environment if subjected to extreme heat and can affect general well-being. For instance, an individual who has unlimited assess to consuming cans of sugary drinks then burning them in order to dispose them off, can subject people around to inhalation of harmful substances released during the burning process, this can then cause health problems Expecially respiratory problems. However, I am of the opinion that reduction in the consumption of these products are profitable as this leads to improvement of general health and environmental quality.

In conclusion, some people are of the opinion of recycling because it provides employment and reduce wastage, others believe that reduced usage is more profitable because, it can improve generally health and lead to less consumption. I am of the opinion that reduce consumption improves overall health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The explanation of the benefits of recycling is clear, but the argument for consuming less is occasionally repetitive and lacks depth in its connection to environmental sustainability. For example, the link between consuming less and health is mentioned, but the logic is slightly convoluted. The position is consistent throughout, but the essay would benefit from more precise examples to support the claims, particularly regarding how reduced consumption specifically impacts the environment beyond just littering.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Then again, the collective effort ago humans'. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, and some sentences are run-on, which affects the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal structure of the sentences sometimes hinders the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices or incorrect collocations, such as 'increase concern' instead of 'increased concern', 'what is sufficient' instead of 'what is necessary', and 'unlimited assess' instead of 'unlimited access'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'sustainability' and 'degradable materials', the overall range is somewhat limited, and errors in word formation occasionally occur.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('reuse of materials are', 'companies decides'), incorrect preposition usage, and punctuation errors. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but these are often marred by errors in tense or word order, such as 'can be made of degradable materials that can result in emission'.
