IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
In recent years, environmental awareness has led to a widespread increase in recycling habits. However, many critics argue that recycling alone cannot solve ecological crises and urge a global reduction in consumer consumption. In my opinion, while recycling is a necessary baseline practice, reducing overall consumption is a far more effective and sustainable long-term solution. On the one hand, advocacy for recycling is deeply rooted in its practical infrastructure and immediate benefits. It allows communities to repurpose materials like glass, plastic, and paper, preventing vast amounts of waste from entering landfills or polluting oceans. Furthermore, processing recycled materials generally requires less energy than manufacturing products from completely raw resources. For instance, aluminum recycling saves roughly 95% of the energy needed to create new aluminum from scratch, demonstrating how the practice significantly dampens industrial carbon footprints. On the other hand, a growing faction argues that recycling merely addresses the symptoms of waste rather than its root cause, which is over consumption. The modern economic model relies on cheap, disposable goods that frequently cannot be recycled infinitely due to material degradation. Lowering consumption—such as opting for durable goods, avoiding fast fashion, or rejecting single-use packaging—directly decreases the industrial demand for raw resources. By simply buying less, society can curtail the massive amounts of carbon emissions generated during the initial extraction, manufacturing, and shipping phases of production. In my view, reducing consumption is fundamentally superior because recycling is heavily limited by economic and systemic inefficiencies. Many plastic variants are highly expensive to process, resulting in millions of tons of sorted waste being incinerated or thrown away anyway. Consuming less bypassed this broken cycle entirely. Therefore, a cultural shift toward minimalism and conscious purchasing is crucial to achieving true environmental stability. In conclusion, recycling serves as an important secondary line of defence against waste accumulation. However, because it cannot keep pace with exponential industrial production, minimising consumer consumption remains the most critical action needed to safeguard the planet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly discuss both the importance of recycling and the argument for reducing consumption, while maintaining a consistent and well-supported personal position throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the comparison between the energy efficiency of recycling and the systemic limitations of current waste management. The argument is logical and persuasive, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements. There are no omissions, and the conclusion effectively synthesises your main points, confirming your stance that consumption reduction is the more critical long-term strategy.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the two viewpoints is smooth, using effective cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a wide and sophisticated range of vocabulary, which allows for precise expression of complex ideas. Phrases such as 'ecological crises', 'industrial carbon footprints', 'material degradation', and 'systemic inefficiencies' are used accurately and naturally. There is a strong awareness of collocation and style, which elevates the quality of the writing. The vocabulary is not only sufficient for the task but also shows flexibility, contributing to a fluent and professional tone throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
