Student answer (Band 5.0)

In contemporary society, girls' and boys' study together in mixed schools. While some people think that both sex benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools because it promotes their personal growth, I largely disagree with this view because it leads to irresponsible sexual behavior and poor relationships among them.

Co-educational schools promote students' personal growth which is a significant factor in their future life. This is because they learn to work together as a group without considering the opposite gender. For instance, when having a group discussion, they can participate equally thus making both sexes feel free and able to compete favorably outside the classroom environment.

On the other hand, separating them can lead to poor relationships. Essentially, most girls who are schooled in girls' schools throughout their life may not feel free to interact with boys because they are not used to or they have never socialized with them particularly those girls who did not have an opportunity to have brothers at home. For example, when girls from single-sex schools go for a competition, they tend to isolate themselves from the rest of the students.

Furthermore, children who are sexually active can develop irresponsible sexual behavior such as homosexuality in single-sex schools. This is because they cannot withstand their feelings for the time they are in school. For example, it is hard to monitor the behavior of learners in schools where students share beds. Consequently, it leads to irresponsible sexual misconduct.

To conclude, although some people think that single-sex schools help children by promoting their personal growth, I strongly disagree with them because it leads to irresponsible sexual behavior and poor relationships need to be considered.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on environmental concerns, recycling, and the need to consume less. However, the student has written an essay about the merits of co-educational versus single-sex schools. Because the response fails to address the prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed for task achievement in relation to the set question. While the student presents a position and supports it with arguments, these are irrelevant to the task instructions. Consequently, the score reflects the failure to address the specific topic provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a topic sentence. There is a discernible progression of ideas, and cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. While the content is irrelevant to the prompt, the internal structure of the essay is coherent and follows a standard academic format. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of arguments is easy to follow, demonstrating a level of control over text organization that would be effective if the content were relevant to the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for an academic essay, showing a sufficient range to express ideas clearly. Phrases such as 'contemporary society', 'compete favorably', and 'irresponsible sexual misconduct' demonstrate a reasonable level of lexical control. There are no significant spelling errors that impede communication. However, the range is somewhat limited and lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. The student relies on fairly standard collocations and occasionally repetitive phrasing, but the vocabulary is adequate for the purpose of conveying the arguments presented, despite those arguments being off-topic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'girls' and boys' study together' (should be 'study') and 'both sex benefit' (should be 'both sexes'). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences are slightly awkward. Despite these errors, the meaning is usually clear, and the grammatical mistakes do not significantly impede the reader's understanding. The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, although the control over these structures is inconsistent. The level of accuracy is sufficient for a mid-range band score.
