Student answer (Band 6.0)

The worries about the enviroment has been growing and the decision to recycle has also been increasing among people. However, there are other opinions which states that we also need to reduce consumption through other ways as recycling is not adequate. This essay will discuss both aspects and demonstrate why I personally think there are many other great solutions to this case like choosing quality over quantity and reducing air polution.

It is known to most people that recycling is one of the best way to help the enviroment. To recycle is to think of ways that old things can be reused in a new way. Therefore, the more we recyle, the less waste we will leave behind. This means that when something is used a second time then it will not get thrown into the trash and be left as a pile of waste causing polution in the ocean or even along the streets. For instance, it is obvious that plastic cups or cans do not just desolve in water or just disappeared on its own; creating waste. So, people often take those cups and cans to recyle and turn them into something else like using them as a pot to hold plants or flowers.

There are other ways to further help the enviroment like purchasing items that are in high in quality rather than buying low quality productions continous times. Choosing to do so helps to cut down the waste because a high quality production can be used for a long time whereas, low quality ones often become broken after a short period; increasing the amount of waste. For example, when looking for engines, it is best to pick one that lasts a long time as engines are not really something that can be recycled. Another way is to use public transport to help reduce the amount of air pollution that are mostly coming from vehicles; heating up the earth. This can also benefit us with better air quality and cool down the Ozone layer.

In conclusion, although recycling is great solution to solving enviromental problems, I believe it is not enough and there are many other ways that can be helpful like purchasing good quality items and cooling down the earth by increasing the usage of public transports.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the importance of recycling and the necessity of reducing consumption. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the recycling paragraph is clear, the second body paragraph introduces 'quality over quantity' and 'public transport' as separate concepts, which makes the argument feel slightly fragmented. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed argument that directly supports your thesis. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, but the depth of analysis could be improved by linking your examples more tightly to the core concept of 'consuming less'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'For instance' to link ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or repetitive. For example, the start of the second body paragraph, 'There are other ways to further help the environment', is a functional but basic transition. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'this case' in the introduction, which is a vague reference to the topic. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, though the connection between the two main arguments in the second body paragraph could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consumption', 'pollution', and 'environment' correctly. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'enviroment' (repeatedly), 'polution', 'desolve', and 'continous'. These errors are noticeable and detract from the overall quality. Furthermore, some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'low quality productions' instead of 'low-quality products' or 'goods'. To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of common academic terms and refining your collocations to sound more natural. The range is sufficient to convey your meaning, but the recurring spelling mistakes prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although recycling is a great solution... I believe it is not enough'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The worries... has been growing', 'pollution... that are mostly coming'), incorrect verb forms ('do not just desolve'), and punctuation errors. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and pluralization. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will help you achieve a higher band score.
