Student answer (Band 6.0)

The world nowadays revolved around circular and sustainable economy which means reusing, recycling and restoring of the things we use. However, there are some views that suggest that to achieve a circular economy we need to consume less and recycling is not enough.

Recycling is a great initiative to save and reuse resources instead of consuming the new resources. People nowadays are concerned about the environment and therefore they choose to recycle and that is completely understandable because nowadays environmental hazards like global warming has been raising a lot of concerns. Besides, as consumers are becoming more concerned about the environment, corporations are also being more focused on sustainability to attract more customers.

Conversely, the view that some people suggest that we need to consume less is also equally valid because we sometimes tend to consume things unnecessarily which might not be good for the environment. Therefore, it is our duty also to consume responsibly, ethically and rationally and safe the environment from the harmful elements.

In conclusion, I think recycling and consuming less are complimentary to each other and if we as a rational consumer start adopting this in our daily routine so this might be beneficial for the future generations to have a green and clean economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the task by discussing recycling and the view that we need to consume less, and it includes a personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the ideas are relatively brief and lack deep development with specific examples or evidence. Furthermore, the response has a significant word count penalty, as it contains only 209 words, falling well short of the mandatory 250-word minimum requirement. Because the task is under-length, the development of ideas is limited, leading to a score of 5.5 for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides of the argument, and a concluding paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Besides', and 'Conversely' are employed to connect points, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. While the logical progression is generally maintained, the brevity of the paragraphs limits the complexity of the cohesive relationships, making a Band 6.0 the most accurate reflection of the text's organizational control.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suited to the topic, including terms like 'sustainable economy', 'environmental hazards', and 'globel warming' (though with a spelling slip). Some less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'complimentary' (intended as complementary) and 'rationally'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation slips, such as 'revolved around circular and sustainable economy' and 'safe the environment' (instead of save). Vocabulary errors do not impede overall communication, placing this response firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, including 'The world nowadays revolved' (tense error), 'global warming has been raising' (collocation/tense issue), and 'if we as a rational consumer start adopting this in our daily routine so this might be' (redundant conjunction and agreement errors). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the grammar aligns with the Band 6 descriptor.
