Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less. I think both recycling and consuming less are important, but people should also try to consume less.

One of the main reasons is that, recyling can reduce the amount of waste. For Example, palstic can be recycled and use it again. As a result it also helps to perserve natural resources. Furthermore, recycling can also save marine habitats and protect other species. For Example, waste that are produced eat by different species which results in deaths of valuable species. Therefore, recycling is important for the proctection of environment as well as for habitat.

On the other hand, consume less is also important. People often used unecassary things which can cause pollution. For Example, cars cause pollution in big cities. People should used public transport instead od their cars. Furthermore, less use of plastic products is also important. For Example, biodegradable packaging can protect the environment. Moreover, food wastage also a important. Less food waste can also play the roles in the protection of the environment. Buying unnecessary electronics should also be banned to protect the environment.

In conclusion, although recycling has certain advantages. Consume less is more important. In my view, consume less have a great impact. In this individual effort is also important by buying less clothes, less foo wastage and less use of electronics may protect the environment

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on recycling and consumption, and presents a clear personal opinion. The writer argues that while recycling reduces waste and preserves resources, consuming less has a greater overall impact. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on consumption lists examples like cars, plastic products, and food wastage without deep elaboration, and some arguments blur into one another. The support provided is relevant but occasionally lacks depth, placing this response at Band 6. The position is maintained throughout, fulfilling the basic requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a clear paragraph structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesive devices are sometimes faulty, mechanical, or repetitively applied, such as the frequent use of 'For Example' and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is present, but logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally hindered by abrupt transitions and underdeveloped sentences. For example, the sentence 'Moreover, food wastage also a important' disrupts the flow. Referencing is generally clear, but mechanical linking words prevent the essay from reaching a higher band, resulting in a solid Band 6 performance for cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'preserve natural resources', 'marine habitats', and 'biodegradable packaging'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors that detract from precision, including 'recyling', 'palstic', 'perserve', 'unecassary', and 'foo wastage'. Grammatical form errors involving vocabulary also appear, such as 'consume less is also important' (using a verb phrase as a noun subject) and 'food wastage also a important'. While communication is not impeded by these issues, the frequency of errors caps the lexical score at a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and concessive clauses ('although recycling has certain advantages'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues, missing articles, and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'use it again', 'waste that are produced eat by different species', 'People should used public transport'). Punctuation is also problematic in places, particularly with sentence fragments in the conclusion ('In this individual effort is also important by buying less clothes...'). These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar performance firmly at Band 5.0.
