Student answer (Band 6.0)

Environment plays a key role in our lives. Some people believe that recycling helps to protect the environment, while others argue that reducing the consumption of such products is the actual solution. I strongly believe that less consumption of recyclable products is an important method to keep environment healthy.

On the one hand, recycling encourages to tranform an existing used product into a new one. Instead of throwing away the used objects such as plastic bottles, the process of recycling introduces us with new products with different shapes and usage. As a result, we can use those items for various purposes. Furthermore, if we don't use recycling approaches, these wasted products could cause pollution and damage to the environment. For instance, broken plastic chairs can be moulded and transformed into new products. Hence, recycling the old items into new items is beneficial for the environment.

On the other hand, the process of recycling concumes a lot of time, energy and cost. Although recycling is helpful, machinary and workers are also required for this procedure that can be costly and time consuming. So instead of frequent recycling, people should limit the use of recyclable items which can be a better approach to save the environment. For example, if the individuals consume less items, it will be a much better approach then the recycling. Instead of just relaying on recycling people should limit the use of such products to protect the environment.

In conclusion, taking measures to protect the enviroment is essential. Recycling the old item into new products is a well-known beneficial way, however, limiting the use of recyclable items can even reduce the need of recycling which is the best approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the view that recycling protects the environment and the view that consuming less is necessary, while also presenting a clear personal position. In the first body paragraph, the writer explains how recycling transforms used goods into new ones, citing plastic chairs as an example. In the second body paragraph, the counterargument is explored, highlighting the time, energy, and costs associated with machinery and workers in recycling plants. The student successfully argues that limiting consumption is the superior approach. However, some ideas are slightly repetitive, particularly in the conclusion where the main points are restated with limited new development. Overall, the task is well-addressed and earns a solid band score for fully engaging with the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a concluding paragraph. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, some cohesive ties feel mechanical or slightly repetitive, and referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as using 'such products' and 'such items' frequently without always clarifying the exact noun referents. Despite these minor issues, the overall arrangement is coherent and demonstrates an adequate control of structural progression for a Band 6.5 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for discussing environmental topics, using terms like 'transform', 'moulded', 'machinery', and 'consumption'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary, but word choices are occasionally imprecise, leading to minor lexical inaccuracies such as 'concumes' (consumes) and 'relaying on' (relying on). Additionally, phrasing like 'keep environment healthy' lacks the appropriate article. Spelling is generally good, though minor typos occur. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, but the lack of more sophisticated lexical collocation and precision keeps the score at a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('if we don't use recycling approaches') and relative clauses ('items which can be a better approach'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as missing articles ('keep environment healthy'), preposition misuse, and comparative phrasing errors ('much better approach then the recycling'). However, these grammatical lapses rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear to the reader. The control over simple sentences is quite good, but complex structures frequently contain minor inaccuracies, which aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor.
