Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, some people believe that concern for the environment is growing so more and more people are choosing to recycle, while others argue that recycling is not enough, we need to consume less. In my opinion, people should use both approaches such as recycling the products and putting certain limits on consumption.

On the one hand, people are choosing to recycle products because limited amount of materials are available on the earth. Materials are needed to produce new products, if existing products are recycled these materials can be saved. Therefore, recycling prevents the society from experiencing a lack of resources. Additionally, recycling products helps to reduce waste in the region. For example, plastic bottles cannot contaminate in soil, if this product is not recycled it can pollute the area. Thus, recycling this kind of product prevents from producing waste in the environment.

On the other hand, critics argue that we also need to consume less due to limited number of recycling plants. Every year human population keep on increasing, which further increase the consumption. So, consumed products are not recycled over the period due to a lack of recycling plants. As a result, restricting the usage may help in overcoming this issue. Furthermore, individuals can maintain a healthy environment by limiting the consumption. This is because various trees and plants are destroyed to produce several products, which can create environmental imbalance. So, limiting the usage allows people to maintain a clean nature.

In conclusion, recycling helps to preserve the resources and reduce the amount of waste created. However, limiting the consumption allows to recycle products in specific period and maintain healthy atmosphere. I believe that individuals should use both the approaches for the betterment of the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the view that recycling is crucial and the view that we need to consume less, while also presenting a clear personal position in the introduction and conclusion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the discussion on why consumption must be reduced due to limited recycling plants is introduced nicely, but the reasoning remains slightly general and could be extended further with deeper examples. The main arguments are generally relevant and clear, fulfilling the requirements for this level nicely, though moving to a higher band would require fully elaborated ideas and a more extensively supported position throughout every body paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main body paragraph dedicated to one of the two opposing views. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'On the one hand', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reuse of 'recycling products' and 'limiting the consumption'. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer would need to employ a wider and more flexible variety of referencing expressions and transitional phrases that integrate ideas more smoothly without drawing attention to themselves.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and topic-related terminology like 'contaminate in soil', 'environmental imbalance', and 'preserve the resources'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing throughout the text, such as saying 'plastic bottles cannot contaminate in soil' instead of 'degrade' or 'decompose', and 'limited number of recycling plants' where 'capacity' might fit better. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate enough that communication is not impeded, but these minor lexical errors and occasional awkward collocations prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Developing more precise word choice and natural collocation control will significantly improve this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include article omissions or misuse, such as 'limited amount of materials are available on the earth' (missing articles and plural agreement issues with 'amount' instead of 'number') and 'human population keep on increasing' (subject-verb agreement). Preposition use also shows occasional strain, such as 'prevents from producing waste'. To reach the next level, the writer needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences when attempting complex structures, while paying closer attention to articles, plurals, and subject-verb agreement.
