Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, there has been growing concern among the public towards implementing sustainable environmental practices in terms of recycling in the society. While some people contend that we must consume less resources suggesting that recycling alone is not sufficient, I believe that it is essential to reduce the over consumption of natural resources alongside the combined efforts in recycling.
On the one hand, recycling the waste and reusing it plays an indispensable role in reducing the environmental pollution to an extent. Moreover, there should be an increased awareness among the people in the society to inclucate these sustainable practices. For example, the usage of natural resources that are needed in producing fresh paper material can be reduced to some extent by recycling the paper waste and reusing it in the production of paper material. Similarly, recycling of plastic waste helps to a great extent in reducing the environmental pollution. Therefore, recycling can be an effective method in controlling pollution and reduced consumption of natural resources in certain aspects.
On the other hand, over usage of resources should be managed along with recycling to achieve effective sustainable practices. For instance, instead of using plastic covers for buying grocery items and so on, people should opt for reusable cloth bags as a safer alternative. This in turn hepls in generating less plastic waste in the community reducing the soil pollution. Furthermore, methods to conserve natural resourses should be instilled such as using public transportation services and alternatives like electric vehicles to reduce the fuel consumption and also to control pollution.
To conclude, although recycling is imperative in protecting the environment, it alone cannot control the detrimental effects on environment. I believe that the combined approach of consuming less resources along with recycling plays an important role in maintaing sustainable environmental practices.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the view that we need to recycle and the view that we must consume less, while clearly stating the writer's own position from the introduction through to the conclusion. Ideas are extended and supported, such as when the student discusses the recycling of paper and plastic waste, and provides practical alternatives like reusable cloth bags and public transportation. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in certain body paragraphs, where arguments could have been pushed further into deeper implications to reach the highest level. The position remains clear throughout, and the main arguments are adequately developed to satisfy the requirements for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the first view, the opposing view, and finally a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'For example', and 'Furthermore', which guide the reader effortlessly through the text. Paragraphing is managed effectively, with each block of text serving a clear structural purpose. While the flow is natural and coherent, a slightly wider variety of more subtle referencing and substitution techniques would be needed to push towards the highest standards of cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used provides a sufficient range for some flexibility and precision, allowing the student to communicate complex ideas about environmental sustainability effectively. Less common items and collocations are attempted with some awareness of style, such as 'sustainable environmental practices', 'over consumption', and 'detrimental effects'. However, there are occasional lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'inclucate' instead of 'inculcate', 'hepls' instead of 'helps', and 'maintaing' instead of 'maintaining'. Word choice is generally adequate, but occasional slip-ups prevent the vocabulary from achieving a higher rating of precision and sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The text displays a good variety of complex structures alongside a high proportion of error-free sentences. The student demonstrates good control of grammar and punctuation, successfully integrating conditional-like meanings, relative clauses, and participial phrases, such as 'instead of using plastic covers for buying grocery items and so on, people should opt for reusable cloth bags as a safer alternative.' While control is generally strong, a few minor errors persist, such as prepositions within grammatical patterns ('concern among the public towards' instead of 'regarding') and minor article slips. Overall, the grammatical range is varied and sentence structures are handled with confidence.
