Student answer (Band 6.0)

Threat to the environment is increasing and the amount of people opting to recycle is also being increased. But some individuals propose that reusing is not sufficent. They think that consumption should be decreased in order to preserve environment. This essay will cover both views and will be concluded with my opinion.

Some individuals think that recyling is a sufficent measure to ensure the safety of the environment. As the awareness on the rescycling is increasing globally and more consumers are recycling the products which can be reused. For instance, even in developing nations like Pakistan and India, where literacy rate is relatively low, due to the efforts of NGOs and local organisations a considerable population is playing a part in safegurading the environment by recycling. This fact proposes that only awareness on recyling can help to preserve the environment.

On the other hand, a proportion of people think that recycling is not the only solution for the protection of environment as the condition of environment is worsening day by day. Threats like climate change and global warming prove that if the adequate measures are not taken immideatly living conditions on this planet will become worse. Condition of environment today proves that only recyling is not enough for safegurading the environment and the consumption of resources should also reduced. A prominent example is fossil fuels, burning of these fuels is harming the environment on a large scale and there is no other solution to this problem rather than reducing the consumption.

In conclusion, threats to the environment are increasing day-by-day which endorse the fact that recycling is not the only solution for preservation of environment there should be measures to reduce the overall consupmtion in order to save the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on recycling versus reducing consumption and includes the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the first body paragraph briefly mentions NGOs and developing nations like Pakistan and India, but this point remains somewhat superficial rather than fully extended. Similarly, the argument about fossil fuels in the second body paragraph introduces a relevant example but lacks deeper exploration. The position is clear throughout, but the overall depth places the response comfortably within the expectations for addressing the task adequately while leaving room for fuller elaboration of supporting arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting views, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on phrases like 'Some individuals think' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is generally functional, but transitions between sentences can occasionally feel abrupt, such as moving from the example of NGOs directly to the concluding thought of the second paragraph. Logical progression is maintained throughout, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's argument without major confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'safeguarding', 'preservation', and 'prominent example'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('sufficent' instead of sufficient, 'rescycling' instead of recycling, 'immideatly' immediately, 'consupmtion' consumption) and occasional word-choice issues, such as using 'reusing' interchangeably with recycling in the introduction. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they highlight the limitations in control over less common lexical items, keeping the vocabulary score at an intermediate level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are, however, several noticeable grammatical errors in sentence structure, article usage, and prepositions. Examples include 'the amount of people opting to recycle is also being increased' (awkward passive voice and quantifier choice), 'due to the efforts of NGOs and local organisations a considerable population is playing a part' (missing punctuation or restructuring needed for flow), and 'there is no other solution to this problem rather than reducing' (non-standard collocation). Punctuation and tense control show some inconsistencies, though the errors rarely impede overall comprehension.
