Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays there is an ongoing debate about whether recycling is a main concern for environment or less consumption is the better approach. Some people argue that concern for the environment is growing and people are choosing to recycle, while others believe that recycling is not enough and we need to consume less. I think that recycling is the best approach.

On one hand, plastics and metals are the main constituents in oour most of the daily rotine products. Instead of throwing them away is just harmful for the environment. For Example, plastic cannot be burned with out causing pollution nor it can be buried or decayed. Therefore, most people thought such products should be recycled to minimise the cause of pollution in the environment.

On the other hand, some people believe that recycling is not the actual solution to the arising problems in the environemnt. They though that if the consumption of such products is reduced then there will be the less harm to environment, and more energy to recycle the goods will be saved. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

For this criterion, the response is impacted by the length requirement, as it falls significantly short of the two hundred and fifty-word minimum, containing only one hundred and eighty-four words. Consequently, the ideas are presented in a limited and under-developed manner. While you do attempt to discuss both views regarding recycling versus consumption, your position is stated simply in the introduction without adequate extension or supporting examples. For instance, the discussion on why recycling is beneficial mentions that plastic cannot be burned or buried, but this point is not fully expanded. Similarly, the alternative view on reducing consumption is touched upon briefly with phrases like 'less harm to environment', but lacks the depth and specific examples required to fully address all parts of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation evident in the structure of the essay, with a clear introductory paragraph followed by body paragraphs discussing each side of the argument and using transition markers such as 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, there is no clear overall progression across the piece due to its brevity. Cohesive devices are sometimes used in a mechanical or inaccurate way, such as 'most of the daily rotine products' or 'Instead of throwing them away is just harmful', which disrupts the logical flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but referencing between sentences is not always clear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of your ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary range used is limited but minimally adequate to convey your basic points about the environment. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'constituents', 'minimise', and 'governmental concerns', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form. For example, 'rotine' is misspelled, 'oour' is incorrect, and phrases like 'cause of pollution in the environment' or 'benefits the governmental concerns to environment' show awkward collocations and inappropriate word forms. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Your grammar features a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors when attempting more complex patterns. There are frequent issues with verb forms, articles, and prepositions within grammatical structures. For instance, phrases like 'with out causing pollution nor it can be buried', 'most people thought such products should', and 'there will be the less harm' demonstrate unstable control over tense consistency, modal usage, and article placement. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement also present problems, resulting in frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader trying to decode your meaning.
