IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

As the population grows and demands change, recycling is a very practical solution to meet the exponential increase in demands. The former view teaches people to be self-sustainable, so they can consume more but waste less. The more people are aware about recycling, the more long-lasting their consumables are. As for the recycling, the first view doesn't only encourage industrial scale recycling but basic recycling techniques at home as well, like home decors, gift accessories, home-grown fruits and vegetables etc. The older generations had a practice to recycle consumables on day to day basis despite having tough life schedules, lack of modern facilities, and limited resources. Yet they lived a healthier and sustainable life.

The later view is envisioning a darker reality. The rising modern aesthetics have made people internalize to spend more and more even if they don't need it. This creates a false demand of unnecessary things and scarcity in the availability of necessities. The need to fit in, the rise in aesthetic trends, and a fear to live off the grid have messed up what needs to be prioritized.

Both views exhibit different solutions to a same problem and neither of them is wrong. As a child, I remember, my grandmother's house was simple yet very creatively designed because how the older generations were not trained to just throw away everything. Moreover, there was a practice to limit unnecessary expenditure, and sustain life in available resources only. These reasons collectively contributed to better resources and healthier environments.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a position that neither is wrong, while your examples about your grandmother’s home and older generations make the discussion relevant. The recycling paragraph explains reuse at home and the value of reducing waste; the consumption paragraph identifies trends, social pressure and unnecessary demand. However, the two views are not explored equally: the case for recycling is more concrete, while the reasons that consuming less is necessary are stated broadly and are not supported with a specific example. Your conclusion also leans toward limiting expenditure and using available resources, but could state more directly how you weigh this against recycling. Develop each view with a clear explanation and a concrete consequence to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it discusses recycling first, then reduced consumption, and ends with a personal example and a concluding judgement. Paragraphing helps readers follow this progression, and links such as “The later view” and “Both views” signal shifts in focus. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, however. “The former view” and “the first view” refer back to the prompt in ways that may confuse the reader, and the final paragraph repeats ideas from the earlier discussion rather than clearly synthesising them. Use more precise references to each position and make the conclusion show how the two approaches relate—for example, that recycling helps but reducing consumption addresses waste at its source.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “self-sustainable,” “scarcity,” “necessities,” “aesthetic trends” and “sustainable life.” These choices allow you to discuss both environmental practices and consumer behaviour, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions, such as “aware about recycling,” “home decors,” “internalize to spend” and “a same problem.” “Exponential increase in demands” is also an imprecise collocation in this context. These attempts at less common language show range, but more natural word partnerships would make the argument sound more precise and fluent. Prefer familiar, accurate phrasing where a more elaborate expression does not fit.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the comparative structure “The more people are aware …, the more long-lasting…” and a sentence beginning “despite having…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “because how the older generations were not trained” has an incorrect clause structure; “a same problem” needs a different article; and “there was a practice to limit” is awkwardly formed. The sentence beginning “As for the recycling” also has a confusing construction around “doesn’t only encourage.” Check articles, clause patterns and punctuation, especially in longer sentences. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control without requiring more complicated structures.
