IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the recent century when evironmental pollution is at its peak concern for perserving the nature worldwide is obvious. The increasing number of individuals recycle the waste in the concern to protect the environment but true environmental protection requires a fundamental shift toward reducing consumption and holding corporations accountable for their production habits.

On one hand, as the population grows and consumption increases the amount of trash genereted also increases threating the soil, water and air. Recycling the valuable materials give them a new life to be used again and also conserve the land. The recycled paper for inxtance save alot of trees which are fundamental for the protection of humans so that they can breathe in fresh air and also are a habitat to many of the wildlife. Recycled materials requires significantly less enery than processing the virign raw materials.

On the other hand, recyling the waste is a very reliable option but it alone is not enough to potect the environment. The plastic and glass lose its quality with each recycle so they can be recycled only a limited number of times. Also, only a few percentage of plastic is recyled with the remaining ending up in landfills and natural ecosystems. People should opt for consuming less by rejecting unnecessary goods and excessive packings. They should choose to use durable, refillable and multiuse systems such as glass bottles and cloth bags instead of plastic ones. In my opinion, genuine environmental preservation can only be achieved by prioritizing reduction and systemic design changes over waste management. Governments must implement strict regulations that force manufacturers to eliminate single-use packaging and adopt circular economy designs.

Recycling is a very good step and should always be appreciated becuase more or less it does help in environmental protection. People should also think of reducing overproduction to safe the planet fro future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear opinion: recycling is useful, but reducing consumption and changing production systems are more important. The discussion includes relevant support, such as recycled paper conserving trees, the limits of recycling plastic and glass, and alternatives like refillable bottles and cloth bags. Your proposal for government regulation also extends the argument beyond individual choices. This meets the task well, while some points remain less fully explained than others. For example, the benefits of recycling are illustrated, but the first view could be developed further by explaining how recycling programmes work or why people support them. The final reference to reducing overproduction is relevant but brief; a specific example would make your conclusion more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting the case for recycling, a paragraph arguing for reduced consumption, and a concluding statement. The contrastive signposts “On one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the discussion, and the main position is easy to identify. However, some connections are mechanical, and the final paragraph partly repeats the introduction and the preceding argument rather than bringing the ideas together. Within paragraphs, several points are placed next to one another without fully showing their relationship—for instance, the discussion moves from recycling limits to consumer choices and then government regulation. Use more precise referencing and transitions to show how these points build on each other, and make the conclusion synthesise both views.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a useful range of topic vocabulary, including “environmental protection,” “landfills,” “single-use packaging,” “durable,” and “circular economy designs.” These choices help communicate the central argument and show some ambition beyond basic vocabulary. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “evironmental,” “perserving,” “genereted,” and “recyling.” Some collocations or forms are also awkward, such as “in the concern to protect” and “a few percentage of plastic,” which can make the reader pause. Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships as complete phrases. More precise wording would also help distinguish recycling materials from reducing consumption and changing manufacturers’ practices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional-purpose construction in “so that they can breathe in fresh air” and a longer sentence beginning “In my opinion.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “Recycling the valuable materials give them” and “The recycled paper … save,” while “Recycled materials requires” also has a singular verb with a plural subject. There are problems with articles and number in “a few percentage,” and the opening sentence is difficult to control because several ideas are compressed together. Review agreement, singular and plural forms, and sentence boundaries; then proofread longer sentences to ensure each clause is clearly connected.
