IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued about protecting environment and it is widely popular in society to choose recycled products. Whereas some individuals believe that recycling is not complete solution but they have to consume less. I think using recycleable products help to create sustainable environment but we have to consume less amount of natural sources to save for future generation. I will discuss this in upcoming paragraph.

Firstly, Nowadays it is more popular and people more likely to have recycled products. So, there is more demand of recycleable and eco-friendly products. Also manufacturing industries produce more recycled product and they sell at cheaper cost than new product with label of sustainable products so that people know the item made by reprocessed materials. For that reason people realise the importance of environment and they should purchase that product over the freshly made by new materials.

However, people follow the trend of using recycled material but they should also consume less amount of this rather than wasting more. Because, the product which made by used materials have high demand and if people consume large amount of that product they should encourage the manufacturer to make item from fresh material and fulfil the consumers requirement. For example, some people buy a product unnecessarily by just watching tag of remade from waste materials to assuming they also take part in saving environment and it result in increased demand for that particular item. If people consume resource as possible of lower amount it should decrease requirement of raw material which comes from natural sources like tree, water etc. The industries who manufacture the goods from waste material also take part in increasing pollution. Therefore if people decrease demand then it also help to protect environment from pollution.

I strongly believe that people should learn to consume less amount of sources to save nature and lower the concern for environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: recycled products can help, but people should also reduce consumption to protect resources. The discussion of recycling includes a relevant point about demand and the use of reprocessed materials, while the second view is supported with an example of people buying items simply because they carry a recycled label. These ideas are relevant, but some are not fully explained. For instance, the claim that buying recycled goods may encourage manufacturers to use fresh materials needs a clearer explanation of how this happens. Your conclusion restates your opinion, but could draw together the two views more explicitly. Developing the cause-and-effect reasoning and adding a more precise example would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph supporting recycling, a contrasting paragraph about reducing consumption, and a concluding opinion. Signposting such as “Firstly,” “However,” and “For example” helps readers follow the main stages. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening says “Whereas” before a sentence that does not form a complete contrast, and “For that reason” does not clearly show how cheaper recycled products lead to greater environmental awareness. Several ideas in the long second body paragraph would be easier to follow if divided into smaller steps, with each sentence linked explicitly to the previous one. Use referencing carefully and vary transitions so the progression feels more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “recycled products,” “sustainable environment,” “natural sources,” “raw material,” and “pollution,” which allows you to discuss the issue clearly. There are also attempts at less common expressions such as “reprocessed materials.” However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less precise. For example, “recycleable” should be “recyclable,” “consume less amount of sources” is unnatural, and “lower the concern for environment” does not express your intended idea clearly. Repetition of “product,” “people,” and “consume” also limits flexibility. Build a bank of accurate environmental collocations, such as “reduce resource consumption” and “conserve natural resources,” and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional reasoning in “if people consume large amount of that product” and a relative clause in “the product which made by used materials.” This shows some range, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical control remain. For example, “the product which made” needs a passive verb (“which is made”), and “it also help” requires subject–verb agreement (“it also helps”). Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “protecting environment” and “large amount.” The opening contrast beginning “Whereas” is not a complete sentence, and some long sentences combine several ideas without clear punctuation. Practise accurate clause formation, passive structures, agreement, and article use while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
