Student answer (Band 4.5)

Concern for the enviroment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But many people are of the opinion that recycling is not enough. They believe people need to consume less.

This essay will discuss these and my own opinion will be provided.

Nowadays, the environment is growing and many individuals are choosing to recycle. There is an extent to which individuals could be forced to consume what the desire.

Recycling is using unwanted materials to produce new items.

Recyling is very advantageous. firstly, it creates jobs for the teaming population. For example, many people engage in the business of picking up used items from the streets and dust bins such as plastics of water and drinks, and so on and resale them to recycling industries. In this case, it has enabled them to earn a living. And recycling company on the other hand, employ people who work for them thereby creating job opportunities. In my former place of work, there were big bins where used plastics were deposited for recycling companies who come to park them on arrangements. From newsletter of the recycling company, they have been able to award several scholarshps to students from the proceeds of the waste.

Secondly, recycled products are cheaper than the new products. This makes them less expensive and affordable than non recycled items. Most items in the markets today such as shoes and bags were manufactured from recycled products.

Recycling takes care of all the unwanted items in the environment. By so doing one hadly can see all manner of unwanted items littering the streets.

In conclusion, recycling should be encouraged for several reasons. It creates employment opportunities and secondly, ite ms made from recycled products are less expensive and affordable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response makes a relevant case for recycling, with examples about employment, affordable products and reduced litter. However, the task asks you to discuss both recycling and the view that people should consume less, then give your opinion. The second view is not meaningfully explained: the sentence about people being “forced to consume what the desire” is unclear and is not developed with reasons or examples. Your conclusion supports recycling but does not directly compare it with reduced consumption or explain whether both are needed. The opening promises to discuss both views, but the essay mainly presents benefits of recycling. To address the task more fully, explain how consuming less reduces resource use and waste, and state clearly how this relates to your position. (The response meets the stated length requirement.)

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is some basic organisation: the response has an introduction, separate paragraphs presenting benefits of recycling, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly” and “Secondly” help signal the points, and examples generally follow the claims they support. However, the overall progression is difficult to follow because the paragraph beginning “Nowadays” introduces an unclear idea and does not lead into a discussion of reduced consumption. Several short paragraphs, including “Recycling is using unwanted materials to produce new items,” interrupt the development rather than building a connected argument. Linking is also repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “And” and “In conclusion.” Organise the essay around the two views, use clear topic sentences, and connect each example explicitly to the point it illustrates.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points about recycling, employment and affordability. Phrases such as “creating job opportunities,” “recycling industries” and “unwanted items” are relevant to the topic, and the examples make the intended meaning generally understandable. However, the range is basic and several choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward, including “teaming population,” “park them on arrangements,” and “Most items in the markets.” Spelling slips such as “enviroment,” “Recyling” and “scholarshps” also reduce accuracy. Some repetition of “recycling,” “items” and “products” limits flexibility. Build a more precise topic vocabulary for consumption and resource use, and check spelling and collocations so that your ideas sound natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response uses mostly simple sentence patterns, with occasional attempts to combine ideas using “such as” and “thereby.” Meaning is often recoverable, but frequent problems with sentence construction and grammatical control sometimes make it unclear. For example, “There is an extent to which individuals could be forced to consume what the desire” has an incomplete or confused structure, while “And recycling company on the other hand, employ people” has problems with articles, agreement and punctuation. The sentence beginning “From newsletter of the recycling company” also lacks a clear grammatical frame. Work first on complete, well-formed sentences, including subject–verb agreement, articles and clause structure. Then practise adding accurate complex sentences to explain causes, contrasts and examples.
