IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Since the starting of human life on this world, we are polluting this by numerous ways like throwing waste into water, ground and also by emitting different harmful gases into atmosphere. As per as the topic is concerned I explain my thesis in following passages.
In early times, there was no awareness about harmful effects of pollution but as of now people are well educated about its consquences. This is the reason that there is a huge increase in numbers of people who are priortiziing to recycle things, rather than just buying new things and throwing away old and used things. No doubt this is a great way to reduce the percentage of pollution that is rising day by day.
We should also keep in mind that for many people it is not possible to reuse some things. For them they should consume less resources. For example, if an employ is going for work daily he should use public transport rather than buying his own car and adding more pollution in the air.
In my opinion, the first approach to reduce pollution should be recycling the things that can harm the nature. But also we should not forget that we must use less so we have resources left for our next generations. So there should be a balance between recycling and consuming less.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and give a clear overall opinion: recycling is useful, but people should also consume less. The example of taking public transport supports the second view, and your conclusion restates the need for balance. However, the discussion is brief and the reasons are only lightly developed. The recycling paragraph mainly says it reduces pollution, without explaining how or giving a specific example; the point that some items cannot be reused is also not explored. The response contains 216 words, so it does not meet the required minimum of 250. Develop each view with a fuller explanation and a relevant example, then make sure the response meets the task length.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate discussion of recycling and reduced consumption, and a concluding opinion. Linking phrases such as “For example” and “In my opinion” help signal the purpose of sections. However, progression is limited because each main point receives little explanation, and some connections are unclear. For instance, “For them they should consume less resources” does not clearly explain how the preceding point about items that cannot be reused leads to consuming less. The opening also promises an explanation “in following passages” rather than introducing the two sides directly. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each example explicitly to its claim, and develop the paragraphs so the argument progresses more fully.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “recycle,” “harmful gases,” “public transport,” and “resources,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “In my opinion” and “there should be a balance.” However, the range is limited and several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision: “consquences,” “priortiziing,” “percentage of pollution,” and “adding more pollution” are examples. Some expressions are also unnatural, such as “Since the starting of human life on this world.” Build a wider set of accurate environmental terms and check spelling and collocations. More precise wording would help explain the effects of recycling and lower consumption.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional example: “if an employ is going for work daily he should use public transport.” This shows an effort to explain a practical consequence, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors in sentence construction and punctuation occur throughout. For example, “Since the starting of human life on this world, we are polluting this” has an awkward time clause and unclear pronoun reference; “For them they should consume less resources” has faulty structure and agreement; and several sentences run together without spaces after full stops. Practise forming clear subject–verb sentences, using articles and plurals accurately, and separating sentences with correct punctuation. A wider range of controlled structures would make the argument easier to follow.
