IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, the environment is becoming one of the biggest concern and for that recycling has become more of a talk among people whereas some people think that only recycling cannot contribute to it but also people should start consuming less. There is no debate to it that both suggestions are valid but I think with today's world it is not possible to consume less.

Firstly, if we talk about recycling, it has made today's world much easier as anything can be recycled and come up to any use for the people. It is much more efficient in this modern world and can clean the environment to much more extent without depriving people from their daily use resources. For example, plastic is one of the most used material whether it is to carry anything from the store, for crockery use and for small mechanical parts so we cannot entirely block it's use from the society but we can somehow manage to keep the environment clean while recycling this material into something more useful.

Moving forward, on the other side some individuals think that recycling is not enough as it does take alot of more time and needs more resources like techanical or mechanical whereas replacing such materials will be a better alternative which can be done in lesser time and cost. For example, plastic is now widely replaced by paper in supermarkets for shopping bags or plastic is being replaced by stainless steel for household use but it still is not removed completely.

In conclusion, both view points have their own merits but for me removing such materials from the society completely is not logical and thus recycling stands out to be a much better option for the wellness of environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: recycling is preferable because eliminating materials entirely is “not logical.” The discussion of recycling is supported with examples of plastic packaging and possible reuse, while the opposing view is illustrated through paper bags and stainless steel. These examples keep the response relevant. However, the two positions are not explored equally: the case for consuming less is described mainly as a practical alternative, without explaining clearly how reducing consumption would lessen environmental harm. Your claim that consuming less is “not possible” also needs qualification or evidence, since it is stronger than the examples support. Develop the environmental benefits and limitations of each approach more fully, then make your own position more nuanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “Firstly,” “Moving forward,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion, and the examples generally appear alongside the relevant point. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always clear. For instance, the second body paragraph moves from the time and resources needed for recycling to replacing materials, but does not explicitly connect this comparison to the environmental case for consuming less. The opening sentence is also overloaded, making the main contrast harder to follow. Use clearer topic sentences and link each example directly to the claim it supports; vary transitions and use pronouns or repeated key terms carefully to make references precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “recycling,” “resources,” “replaced,” and “environment,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “mechanical parts” and “stainless steel.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “come up to any use,” “clean the environment to much more extent,” and “for crockery use.” Repetition of “plastic,” “use,” and “environment” also limits flexibility. Spelling errors such as “alot” and “techanical,” along with the incorrect form “view points,” reduce accuracy. Build a bank of natural collocations for environmental arguments and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “whereas,” “as,” and “which,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some sentences, however, contain errors in agreement, articles, possessives, and punctuation. For example, “one of the biggest concern” needs a plural noun, and “one of the most used material” has the same agreement problem. In “it's use,” the possessive form is needed, while the opening sentence joins several ideas without clear punctuation. The sentence beginning “For example, plastic is one of…” also becomes difficult to control because several uses are listed in one structure. Practise checking subject–verb and noun agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and split long sentences when their clauses become difficult to manage.
