IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays the concern for our ecosystem and environment is growing rapidly among the people. They are increasingly receyling the materials they use. However some are of opninion that just recycling is not enough we must also reduce the useage of materials that are not easliy degraded in the environment. I agree on this point, due to large population and its usage, just recyling is not enough, we need to reduce the usage as well.

Recycling material generally means the proper disposal of waste in a way that it is reused for some other purpose, resulting in a reduce in the waste. People are now a days more effectively recycling plastics and cloths due to the relative education and exposure about our ecosystem. The more the things are recycled the less harm they cause to the ecosystem and our environment.

However, the popultaion and its usage has increased drastically, just recyling would not be as effective if we do not keep a check on our utilzation. Recyling of something means turninig it into something that can be used for another purpose. If we keep on reclcling without reducing our utilizations then we will reach to a bottleneck where more recycling will rarely help. People who are of this opinion are genrally more farsighted for our ecosystem preservation.

To sum things up, it can be said that these two go hand in hand in the preservation of our environment and ecosystem. We need to follow the three R rule in order to make our earth habitbale for a long time. The three R rule says: Reduce. Recycle , Reuse.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that recycling should be accompanied by reduced consumption, and you address both views. The explanation of recycling and its environmental benefit gives the first view some relevant support. However, the discussion remains general, and the case for reducing consumption is not fully developed: the reference to population growth and a “bottleneck” does not explain concretely how lower use would reduce waste or environmental harm. The conclusion restates the combined importance of the two approaches, but the “three R” rule introduces reuse without discussing it in the main argument. To strengthen the response, explain each view with a specific example and develop the link between consumption, waste, and environmental impact more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your position, separate body paragraphs discuss recycling and reduced consumption, and a conclusion summarises your view. This logical paragraphing supports the reader, and transitions such as “However” and “To sum things up” make the main stages easy to follow. The ideas generally progress from the benefits of recycling to its limitations. Some connections are less clear or repetitive, though: the definition of recycling is repeated in both body paragraphs, and “these two” in the conclusion could refer more precisely to recycling and reducing consumption. The final three-R statement also adds a new element. Avoid repeating definitions and use explicit references to make links between ideas more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “recycling,” “waste,” “utilization,” and “preservation,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “farsighted” and “bottleneck.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “usage,” “recycling,” and “environment,” while several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “a reduce in the waste,” “relative education,” and “reach to a bottleneck.” Spelling errors such as “receyling,” “opninion,” and “habitbale” are noticeable and weaken the overall control of vocabulary. Build a wider set of accurate environmental collocations and proofread spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple and longer sentences, and some complex structures help express contrast and cause, as in “However, the population and its usage has increased drastically” and “If we keep on recycling without reducing our utilizations then…”. The main ideas remain understandable. However, control is uneven in longer sentences, and there are errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and punctuation. For example, “the population and its usage has increased” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “just recycling is not enough we must also reduce…” joins two independent clauses without suitable punctuation or a conjunction. “Means turninig it into” also needs a grammatical form after “means.” Practise accurate clause boundaries and check agreement and verb patterns when editing.
