IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The worry about environment is increasing among the people, and many people prefer to recycle the used materials. And according to some people only recycling is not the solution for protecting environment, we must need to reduce the consumption. In my opinion we must need to reduce our daily life consumption along with recycling of used materials.
As recycling is very important and effective solution for the protection of environment. By collecting the old, used materials from around the area or country we bring them to factories for recycling that materials. Due to which no more these materials are using and introducing to environment, already present materials are used for manufacturing new goods. This is the way we can reduce the presence of harmfull and extra materials. For example if it is collected for recycling the area is also cleaning and clearing, while it is again using to produce new materials without introducing more amount of this materials to environment.
Alonge with recycling, we should also reduce to consume less. There are several ways to reduce our daily life consumptions which can lead to protection of envronment. For example if we purchase cloths so we should need to use it for longe, till it usable. We do not need to change our cloths just because of trend changes. Similarly we choose the alternate of goods which is more durable than other. Like using plastic bowls for eating is dangerous for both, health as well as environment. We need to use silver intead of plastic. This is more durable and will not need to buy new after short time. Similarly we need to use public transport intead of private, if their is no any really need for it. By this we can reduce our feul consumption and due to which the pollution will be limited in environment.
We can conclude that recycling is good and effective process for environment protection. But we also need to limit our need and consumption as possible which can also play a very positive role in this.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a consistent opinion: recycling is valuable, but consumption should also be reduced. The two main body paragraphs are relevant, with examples such as reusing clothes for longer and choosing public transport. This meets the task, although the discussion is unevenly developed. The recycling paragraph explains collection and reuse, but some points are unclear and repeat the same idea rather than showing its limits or impact in detail. The consumption paragraph offers several examples, yet the comparison between plastic bowls and silverware is asserted rather than fully explained. To strengthen the response, develop each example with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation and discuss more explicitly why recycling alone cannot solve environmental problems.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for recycling and reduced consumption, and a conclusion. The progression from one view to the other is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “For example,” “Similarly,” and “We can conclude” help signal relationships between ideas. This organisation is effective, though some cohesion is mechanical or unclear. Repeated use of “Similarly” makes the examples feel like a list, while “Due to which” does not clearly connect to a complete preceding statement. References such as “this” and “these materials” are sometimes vague. For a stronger progression, vary linking methods and make each sentence’s connection to the previous point explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “recycling,” “consumption,” “durable,” “pollution,” and “public transport,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “manufacturing new goods.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less natural: “worry about environment,” “harmfull and extra materials,” and “feul consumption” are examples. Several words are repeated, particularly “materials,” “environment,” and “need.” Build accuracy by learning common environmental collocations and checking spelling, and use more precise alternatives where possible—for instance, distinguish waste from pollution and explain what is being consumed or reused.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional examples beginning “if” and clauses explaining consequences. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “As recycling is very important and effective solution” is a sentence fragment, and “we must need to reduce” uses an incorrect verb pattern. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence construction in “we bring them to factories for recycling that materials” and “if their is no any really need for it.” Improve control by writing complete sentences, using one modal construction at a time (“we must reduce”), and checking articles and subject–verb agreement. Punctuation can also help separate long or loosely connected ideas.
