IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Environment pollution is becoming the highest concerning topic for the world. People are doing various activities for making our environment better. Many people argue that recycling is the best option while other thinks that we should use less . In my opinion, recycling provides much benefit rather than less consuming.

Clothing industry is one of the most profitable industry in the world. However, it makes our environment polluted especially the rivers are affected while making clothes. For example, it would be great initiative to introduce a heathy nature, provided that we reuse the clothes instead of throwing them.

Moreover, plastic is a convenient tool for people to carry something where it is also detrimental for our environment. For example, people use plastic as a food container. water bottle etc. We all know plastic is not only harmful for our nature but also dangerous for our heath. If we use it by recycling it makes a step to provide a better world.

On the other hand, many believed that we should have a limitation to use natural resources. For example, purified water is decreasing day bye day. Without wasting water , we can consume it as we needed. If possible , people will get the better future for our environment.

In conclusion, although both ways will play a vital role to provide a healthier nature, in my point of view, recycling will show the faster solution to reduce pollution. Government should also take necessary steps like environment awareness programs, introduce some advertisements and slogans related to nature.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You present a clear preference for recycling, and the examples about clothing, plastic and water are relevant to environmental protection. However, the discussion does not fully develop both views: recycling receives two paragraphs, while consuming less is addressed briefly through water use alone. The explanation that recycling is a “faster solution” is asserted rather than supported or compared with reducing consumption, and the clothing example does not clearly explain how reusing clothes reduces pollution. To strengthen the response, explain the benefits and limitations of each approach, then support your opinion with a specific comparison or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs on recycling and reduced consumption, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the clothing example moves from river pollution to reusing clothes without explaining the link, and the plastic paragraph shifts from containers to health risks and recycling. Some connections are also awkward or repetitive, including “For example” in consecutive paragraphs. Use clearer topic sentences and explain how each example supports the point, while making the contrast between the two approaches more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “recycling,” “natural resources,” “polluted,” and “environment awareness programs,” so the topic is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “detrimental” and “vital role.” However, inaccurate word choice and collocation are noticeable and sometimes make ideas difficult to interpret: “highest concerning topic,” “introduce a heathy nature,” and “provide a better world” are not natural expressions in these contexts. Spelling errors such as “heathy” and “heath” also reduce accuracy. Build a bank of precise topic phrases and check spelling; for example, describe pollution as a “major global concern” and say that reuse can “reduce textile waste.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “If we use it by recycling…” and a contrast clause beginning “although.” These attempts show some range, but errors in sentence construction and agreement recur. For example, “other thinks” should use a plural verb, while “one of the most profitable industry” needs a plural noun after “one of the.” The sentence beginning “For example, it would be great initiative…” is also structurally unclear, and “Without wasting water, we can consume it as we needed” has an incorrect verb form. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals and verb forms, then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries to make your meaning consistently clear.
